Frequently Asked Questions

Can aloe vera be used to treat sunburn?

Aloe vera can not only help with the healing process of sunburn, but it can limit your discomfort by soothing and cooling your compromised skin.

The aloe vera gel, which is found inside the aloe vera’s thick leaves, has many anti-inflammatory benefits.

It can also moisturise the skin and help to prevent the severity of peeling that happens when your sunburn starts to fade.

How long does sun cream last?

Sunscreen usually lasts for at least 3 years before it goes bad, and after this time, it becomes less effective at blocking UV rays, increasing your chances of getting sunburn or skin cancer.

However, if your bottle is less than 3 years old but it’s been left in a hot car for a couple of months, it probably won’t be very effective, either.

Do your lips need sun protection?

Just like the rest of your body, your lips are susceptible to sun damage, meaning they’re at risk of skin cancer if not protected, too.

Using a lip balm with an SPF of at least 30 will filter out those harmful UV rays, in addition to protecting you against sun damage.

Which factor of sunscreen should I use?

The NHS recommends using a sunscreen that has at least an SPF of 30 to protect your skin against UVB rays.

Also, make sure your sunscreen or daytime moisturiser has at least a 4-star UVA protection rating.

This applies whether you have a darker skin tone or skin that tans easily - you can still get skin damage if you don’t apply sunscreen.

Why is sun cream important?

Sun cream isn’t just important on warm, sunny days, but on cloudy and rainy days, too.

Without wearing a layer of sun cream, your skin is at risk of being exposed to harmful UV rays which can lead to skin damage, wrinkles, sunburn, and sometimes skin cancer.

It’s important to wear an SPF of at least 30 to ensure you’re protected.

How does after sun work?

After sun does what it says on the tin - you apply it after you’ve spent time in the sun.

Even if your skin isn’t sunburnt, it’s still beneficial to apply after sun to replenish your skin’s lost moisture.

It’s basically a moisturiser that contains added ingredients like aloe vera to soothe compromised skin.

You don’t have to apply a product labelled as ‘after sun’ either - aloe vera gel is just as effective at cooling scorched skin.

When should after sun be applied?

After sun should be applied after each day in the sun.

If you’ve returned from your holiday, it should be applied until your sunburn disappears or each day after you shower to prolong your tan.

Can after sun prolong your tan?

One of the main things that can prolong your holiday glow is moisturising.

When your body sheds dead skin cells, your tan will gradually fade.

You’ll want to keep applying your after sun even when you’ve arrived home to give your sun-parched skin that much-needed hydration.
