Frequently Asked Questions

Is sildenafil the same as Viagra, Eropid and other brands?

Sildenafil is an active ingredient used in many erectile dysfunction medications.

It’s the main active ingredient in Viagra, Eropid, Liberize, and Aronix ED tablets, to name but a few.

This means that these medications all work to treat your condition in the same way.

What dose of sildenafil do I need?

Three doses of sildenafil are commonly available: 25mg, 50mg, and 100mg.

The recommended starting dose is 50mg, which is available in both prescription and over-the-counter treatments.

If you find that this dose is not effective, we recommend speaking to your doctor or prescriber to see whether they would recommend a different dose for you.

How do you take sildenafil tablets?

Take one sildenafil tablet around one hour before you plan to have sex.

Swallow the tablet whole with some water.

Do not take sildenafil more than once a day.

Who should not take sildenafil?

Sildenafil may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not take these tablets if you are allergic to any of the ingredients or if:

  • You have severe heart problems
  • You have severe liver problems
  • You have recently had a stroke or heart attack
  • You have low blood pressure
  • You have certain, rare inherited eye diseases, e.g. retinitis pigmentosa
  • You have ever had a loss of vision due to non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION)

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine if:

  • You have sickle-cell anaemia
  • You have leukaemia
  • You have multiple myeloma
  • You have a deformity of your penis or Peyronie’s disease
  • You have problems with your heart
  • You have a stomach ulcer or a bleeding problem, e.g. haemophilia
  • You have diabetes

What are the side effects of sildenafil?

Like all medicines, sildenafil may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. The most common side effects of sildenafil are:

  • Nausea
  • Facial flushing
  • Hot flushes
  • Indigestion
  • A colour tinge in your vision
  • Blurred vision
  • Visual disturbances
  • A stuffy nose
  • Dizziness

For a complete list of side effects, please refer to the patient information leaflet included with your medication.

If you experience any side effects not included in the patient information leaflet, you can report them using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.

Can I buy sildenafil online?

You can buy sildenafil online from pharmacies like ours.

You’ll still need to follow all of the procedures you would when buying sildenafil in a high street pharmacy, but you can do everything from the privacy of your own home.

#Perfect for those who find talking about erectile dysfunction in a pharmacy a little embarrassing.

Is sildenafil incompatible with any medications (contraindications)?

Sildenafil can interact with some medications, causing some contraindications, so if you’re already taking other medications make sure to speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking these tablets.

Some medications that can’t be taken at the same time as sildenafil include:

  • Nitrate medicines or nitric oxide donors, which are often used to ease chest pain or heart failure, e.g. glycerine trinitrate, isosorbide mononitrate, isosorbide dinitrate, amyl nitrate (“poppers”), nicorandil, sodium nitroprusside
  • Riociguat or other medicines from the group called guanylate cyclase stimulators, which are used to treat high blood pressure in your lungs, including that caused by blood clots
  • Ritonavir, which is used to treat HIV
  • Other erectile dysfunction treatments
  • Alpha-blockers, which are used to treat urinary problems caused by an enlarged prostate or high blood pressure, e.g. alfuzosin, doxazosin, tamsulosin
  • Protease inhibitors, which are used to treat HIV, e.g. saquinavir
  • Cimetidine, which is used for heartburn
  • Itraconazole and ketoconazole, which are used for fungal infections
  • Erythromycin, which is an antibiotic

Why can’t I drink grapefruit juice when I’m taking Sildenafil?

You should not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while taking sildenafil, as they can affect your medication.

This is because they contain a kind of chemical called furanocoumarins.

This chemical reacts with an enzyme in the lining of your gut and liver which breaks down lots of different kinds of medications, making it less effective.

This means that if you eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice when taking a medication that needs this enzyme to break down, the enzyme won’t be able to do its job properly.

This can lead to too much of the medication you’re taking ending up in your bloodstream, giving you a much higher dosage than you needed to take and possibly causing side effects.
