What are Kwells tablets?
Kwells are fast-acting and effective tablets designed to help manage travel sickness. They contain the active ingredient hyoscine hydrobromide and can be taken before travelling to help stop symptoms from developing, or at the first signs of feeling unwell.
What are Kwells used for?
Kwells tablets are used to prevent and relieve the symptoms of travel sickness like nausea, dizziness and vomiting. They’re suitable for different types of travel, including car, sea and air travel, where movement can trigger these symptoms.
Benefits of Kwells tablets
- Tablets conveniently melt in the mouth, meaning they can be taken without water.
- Flexible use, whether taken before travel or once symptoms begin.
- Suitable for a variety of travel types, from short trips to longer journeys.
- Can be sucked, chewed, or swallowed whole, and dissolve rapidly for quick absorption.
How do Kwells tablets work?
Kwells tablets contain hyoscine hydrobromide, which works by affecting the balance system in your inner ear and the signals sent to your brain.
When you travel, motion can cause mixed signals between your eyes and inner ear, which can trigger feelings of sickness. Kwells help by blocking these messages before they reach the part of the brain that controls nausea and vomiting.
How long does Kwells take to work?
Kwells tablets usually start to work within 20-30 minutes, so they can be taken shortly before your journey begins.
Because they’re absorbed quickly through the mouth, they’re a useful option when you need relief without a long wait.
How long do Kwells last?
The effects of Kwells tablets typically last for up to six hours, helping to keep symptoms under control throughout your journey.
If needed, you can take another dose after this time to maintain relief during longer trips.
How to take Kwells
Kwells tablets are designed to be easy to take, as they can be sucked, chewed or swallowed. They can also be split in half if needed, as there is a scoreline down the middle.
When taking Kwells:
- Take up to 20-30 minutes before travelling, or at the first signs of nausea.
- Do not take more than three doses in a day to avoid taking too much.
Kwells dosage
Always take Kwells travel sickness tablets exactly as instructed by a pharmacist, or as is written on the packaging.
- Adults should take one tablet every six hours if required.
- Children over 10 may take half a tablet or a full tablet as required.
Kwells side effects
Like all medicines, Kwells tablets can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them.
Common side effects include:
- feeling drowsy or dizzy
- dry mouth
- blurred vision
- constipation
These effects are usually mild and short-lived. If they persist or become troublesome, speak to your pharmacist or doctor. For more information, read the patient information leaflet.
When to seek medical help
If you experience any of the following, you should stop taking Kwells straight away and speak to a doctor or pharmacist:
- a fast or irregular heartbeat that doesn’t settle
- difficulty passing urine
- confusion, hallucinations or severe dizziness
- painful red eye with changes in vision
- a high temperature
Call emergency services if you have severe symptoms like difficulty breathing, a seizure, loss of consciousness or an allergic reaction. Do not drive yourself to A&E.
When not to use Kwells
Do not take Kwells tablets if you:
- are allergic to hyoscine hydrobromide or any of the ingredients
- have glaucoma
- have a blockage in your stomach
- have an enlarged prostate
Additionally, you should not give these Kwells tablets to children under the age of 10.
Can I drink alcohol if I take Kwells?
It’s best to avoid alcohol while taking Kwells. Alcohol can increase the sedative effects of the medicine, making you feel more drowsy or less alert.
Kwells and pregnancy
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Kwells to make sure it’s safe for you.

Alternatives to Kwells
If Kwells tablets aren’t suitable for you, there are other travel sickness treatments available that work in different ways.
For example, there are antihistamines used for travel sickness, like promethazine (Avomine). Or, for people who prefer not to take tablets, there are non-medicinal approaches like travel bands or ginger products.
The right option can depend on how long you’re travelling for, how quickly you need relief, and whether you’re prone to side effects like drowsiness.
Kwells vs Stugeron
Kwells and Stugeron are both used to prevent travel sickness, but they contain different active ingredients and work in slightly different ways.
Kwells contain hyoscine hydrobromide, which works by blocking the nerve signals that cause nausea, helping to stop symptoms before they begin.
Stugeron contains cinnarizine, an antihistamine that reduces the sensitivity of the balance system in your inner ear to movement.
Both options can be effective, but generally Kwells are often chosen when faster relief is needed, while Stugeron may be preferred for longer journeys where more sustained control is helpful.
Frequently asked questions about Kwells
Can you get Kwells for kids?
Kwells tablets are available for children, with lower-strength Kwells Kids tablets designed specifically for younger users.
Standard Kwells tablets are typically suitable for adults and children over 10, so it’s important to check the packaging to make sure you’re using the right product.
Can you take Kwells for general nausea?
Kwells are designed for travel-related nausea caused by motion, rather than general feelings of sickness. They’re most effective when symptoms are linked to movement during journeys.
Do Kwells make you drowsy?
Kwells can cause drowsiness in some people. If you feel sleepy, dizzy or less alert after taking them, you should avoid driving or operating machinery.
How many Kwells should I take?
For adults, the usual dose is one tablet every six hours as needed. Do not take more than three doses in 24 hours and always follow the instructions on the packaging.
Is Kwells the same as Dramamine?
No. Kwells and Dramamine are both used to help with travel sickness, but they contain different active ingredients.
Kwells contain hyoscine hydrobromide, while Dramamine contains the antihistamine dimenhydrinate, so they may work slightly differently. For example, Dramamine may need to be taken 30-60 minutes before your journey to be effective.
