Zoely is a type of oral contraceptive, sometimes known as “The Pill”, taken by women to enable them to have sex without risk of pregnancy. It contains both a progestogen and an oestrogen hormone which work in combination to prevent pregnancy.
How Zoely works.
Zoely is made up of two hormones - a progestogen hormone called nomegestrol acetate and an oestrogen hormone called estradiol. Zoely manipulates your hormones to prevent an egg being released from your ovaries, thickens the fluid in your cervix, and prevents the lining of your womb thickening enough for an egg to grow in it.
What are the benefits of Zoely?
When taken correctly, Zoely is highly effective in preventing pregnancy, allowing you to have safe sex at any time of the month. In some cases, it can be taken as a way of controlling irregular periods. Bear in mind that Zoely does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases, and another form of contraception such as a condom should be used for safer sex.
How to take Zoely.
You should begin taking Zoely on the first day of your period, starting with the correct day of the blister pack. It doesn’t matter what time of day you take it, but it should always be around the same time. Take one pill per day (24 white active, 4 yellow inactive tablets) until the blister pack is finished, then start the next pack immediately.
Read the patient information leaflet very carefully for more information about what to do if you forget to take a pill.
Is Zoely right for me?
Zoely is prescribed to women who want to be safe from pregnancy. However, it may not be right for you dependent on your medical history or other medications you are taking. Make sure you fully detail both of these in the medical questionnaire. You cannot take Zoely if you are allergic to nomegestrol acetate, estradiol or any other ingredient listed in the patient information leaflet. Do not take this treatment if you are pregnant, if you or any of your family have problems relating to blood clots, if you have had angina, a heart attack or stroke, if you have or have had breast cancer or cancer of any of the genital organs, bad migraines, severe chronic liver disease, or unexplained vaginal bleeding.
What are the side effects of taking Zoely?
All medications come with the risk of side effects, although not everyone gets them. You can reduce your risk of getting them by disclosing your medical history and any other medications you are on to your doctor. Common side effects of Zoely include nausea, vomiting, changes to your period, depression, mood swings, painful breasts and headaches. Seek immediate medical attention if you believe you may have developed a blood clot. There is a possible link between Zoely and breast cancer, which you can read about in the patient information leaflet, along with a full list of potential side effects.
