What is combination feeding?
Combination feeding is where you feed your baby using a combination of breastfeeding and bottle-feeding. The bottle may contain either formula or breast-milk that has been expressed, depending on you and your baby’s needs. Although the World Health Organisation recommends breastfeeding your baby for the first 6 months of its life, combination feeding may provide a solution that fits you and your baby’s needs better than breastfeeding alone if you:
- Have had initial difficulties when trying to breastfeed
- Have to spend time away from your baby
- Want your partner or family members to experience feeding the baby to help them to bond and allow you to rest
- You are already bottle-feeding your baby, but would like to try breastfeeding
Bottle-feeding vs Breastfeeding
It is recommended to breast-feed your baby for the first 6 months of their life as it provides the best nutrition for your baby, can help to defend against infection and is easily digested by babies. It isn’t possible or suitable for every mother to breast-feed, which is why many formula brands have created infant formulas that are nutritionally complete and can be used as a substitute or in combination with breastfeeding. For some people, breastfeeding is too stressful and bottle-feeding their baby is more convenient and allows them to share feeding duties with their partner or family member. Although breastfeeding is recommended, how you feed your baby is up to you. It is recommended to seek advice from your healthcare provider before you make a decision.

How to use this product
This product is created under strict hygienic conditions, but it is not sterile. It is important that you follow these instructions carefully to avoid your baby from becoming ill.
- Pull the safety seal and open the lid before removing the foil seal and disposing of it
- Wash your hands well
- Wash and sterilise all utensils according to manufacturers instructions
- Boil 1 litre of fresh tap water
- Allow the boiled water to cool for no more than 30 minutes
- Measure the required amount of water into a sterilised bottle - do NOT use artificially softened or repeatedly boiled water
- Using the scoop provided, add the correct number of scoops of powder - levelling off each scoop with the back of a clean, dry knife - do NOT use any other measuring utensil
- Place the sterilised teat and cap on the bottle and shake well until the powder is fully dissolved
- Cool the bottle under cool running water or in a bowl or jug of cold water until lukewarm - do not immerse the teat
- Test the temperature by shaking a few drops onto the inside of your wrist
Warnings
Do NOT add extra powder or water to make the feeds stronger or weaker and do NOT press powder into scoop. Using too much or too little powder can cause your baby to become ill. For older babies, made-up formula can be added to food.
When NOT to use SMA First Infant Milk
Do NOT use this product if your child has a cows’ milk allergy or is allergic to any of the ingredients (see ingredients tab for full list). Prepare each feed in individual bottles when required. Do NOT alter or add anything to the formula unless medically directed. Do NOT warm feeds in the microwave, hot spots may occur and cause scalding. Remember that cows’ milk should not be used as a drink during the first year.
