Frequently Asked Questions

What vitamins should I take during pregnancy?

There are vitamins that are important for you to take during pregnancy, and vitamins you should strictly avoid as they may cause harm to your unborn baby.

If you’re pregnant or think you could be, it’s recommended that you take folic acid and a vitamin D supplement.

You should take 400 micrograms of folic acid every day, from before you become pregnant until you’re 12 weeks along.

This reduces the risk of problems in the baby’s development in the early stages of pregnancy.

Avoid cod liver oil or any supplements containing vitamin A as it could harm your baby - always check the label for retinol, as this is another word used to describe vitamin A.

What is the difference between cod liver oil and omega-3?

Cod liver oil is a supplement that contains omega-3 along with vitamin A and D, whilst omega-3 supplements by themselves typically will only contain omega-3.

Both omega-3 and cod liver oil supplements contain the important fatty acids which help you to maintain a healthy heart, amongst other benefits.

If you’re taking omega-3 supplements, the NHS recommends that you should avoid cod liver oil as you’d be taking more than what your body needs to function as it should.

If you’re looking to reap the benefits of other vitamins as well as healthy fats, cod liver oil might be for you - you should stay clear if you’re pregnant, however, as too much vitamin A can be very harmful to your baby.

What are the best supplements for joint health?

Supplements like turmeric and fish oil are known to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may help to reduce the symptoms of joint pain.

There are also components like glucosamine and chondroitin, which are commonly found in multivitamins targeted for joint pain, that may prevent the bones from rubbing against each other, a cause of inflammation and pain.

Do multivitamin tablets work?

Vitamin supplements can be effective at treating deficiencies in certain nutrients when you’re not getting enough of them from your diet or lifestyle.

Your diet should always be the first place you look to for your vitamin intake, but if you find that you’re struggling to get enough of a certain nutrient, vitamin supplements could help you get back on track.

When choosing your vitamin supplements, we’d recommend asking your doctor or pharmacist for advice that’s tailored to you.

They can help you to assess your lifestyle and nutritional needs and make sure these are met through a balanced diet with food supplements to back up your intake if you need them.
