Rizatriptan is a medication used to relieve migraine attacks, including migraines with an aura. It can be used to ease an attack as it begins, or to help manage an ongoing one, but cannot be taken before one occurs as a method of prevention.
How does Rizatriptan work?
Rizatriptan contains an active ingredient of the same name, which belongs to a family of medicines called triptans. It works by constricting dilated blood vessels in the brain, which eases the migraine. You may only use this medication to resolve migraines once they have been diagnosed as the cause of the pain.
What are the benefits of Rizatriptan?
Rizatriptan can reduce the discomfort caused by a migraine, which can affect your mood and ability to complete day to day tasks. This can lead to irritability and low mood. By easing the pain, you can increase your quality of daily life.
How do I take Rizatriptan?
Your doctor will advise you on the dosage you should be taking, and the following should only be used as a rough guide.
The recommended dose is one 10mg tablet when your symptoms begin to develop. Do not take Rizatriptan before you begin to get symptoms, do not take more than 20mg in any 24 hour period, and do not take two tablets within two hours.
Is Rizatriptan right for me?
Rizatriptan should be taken by adults wanting to relieve migraines, but there are exceptions which may mean it is not right for you. It is important you inform your doctor of any medication you are taking, including over the counter medication, when you complete the medical questionnaire.
You will not be prescribed Rizatriptan if you are allergic to rizatriptan or any of the other ingredients listed in the patient information handbook. You may also not be allowed to take it if you have had heart problems, angina, or have previously had a heart attack, stroke or mini-stroke, have high blood pressure, or liver or kidney problems. You also may not be prescribed Rizatriptan if you are taking other medication to treat migraines or depression.
What are the side effects of Rizatriptan?
Any form of medication can have side effects, although many people don’t experience any. Always read the patient information leaflet and familiarise yourself with the side effects before use. Common side effects of Rizatriptan include dry mouth, throat discomfort, palpitations, dizziness, sleepiness, and chest pains. You can reduce the risk of experiencing side effects by letting your doctor know all other medication you are currently taking.
