What is Pholcodine Linctus?

Pholcodine Linctus is a cough medicine that’s designed to ease dry, tickly coughs. It helps to reduce the urge to cough, keeping that irritating, automatic cough at bay. This product is perfect for those over the age of 12 who are suffering with a dry cough caused by allergies, a cold, the flu, and more.

How will Pholcodine Linctus treat my dry cough?

Pholcodine Linctus works to ease your dry cough by working on your central nervous system, directly affecting the cough centre in your brain. It supresses the urge you have to cough, helping to reduce your cough and giving your irritated throat some room to heal.

What is a dry cough?

A dry cough, which is also called a tickly cough, is a type of cough that doesn’t bring up and mucus or phlegm. Dry coughs are often caused by irritation in your throat, which creates that tickly, annoying feeling that triggers your cough. There are lots of reasons why you may get a dry cough, with some of the most common including:

  • Cold and flu
  • Asthma
  • Acid reflux or heartburn
  • Allergies, e.g. hay fever
  • Sore throat

Is pholcodine any different to codeine?

As pholcodine and codeine have similar names and are both used in dry cough medicines, it’s natural that you’d get them confused! One of the main differences is that pholcodine is much less likely to cause addiction than codeine, making it a more popular cough remedy for some patients. Another important difference is that codeine can be used to ease pain, whereas pholcodine should only be used to ease coughs.

Can I use this medicine if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking pholcodine linctus. Regularly taking pholcodine at this time can affect your baby, so you should avoid using this product if possible and should follow the instructions of your doctor or pharmacist carefully.

  • CNS depressants, e.g. hypnotics (sleeping pills), tranquilisers, opioid pain killers (e.g. morphine, codeine, tramadol)
  • Neuromuscular blocking agents, which are anaesthetics used during surgery
  • Any other cough or cold medications

Can I drive after taking this cough medicine?

Pholcodine linctus can make you feel drowsy after you’ve taken it.
