What is Numark Pholcodine Linctus?

Numark Pholcodine Linctus is a medicine that is designed to treat an unproductive cough, also known as a dry or a tickly cough. The active ingredient in this medicine is pholcodine, which is a cough suppressant that also provides a mild sedative effect. Pholcodine is an opioid, which means its effect is similar to that of morphine.

What’s the difference between pholcodine and codeine?

Pholcodine and codeine are both uses as treatments for a dry cough that has been caused by an infection or allergy. Codeine is more commonly used for treatments but is far more likely to cause dependency, or addiction, than pholcodine. Pholcodine though has a higher risk of respiratory depression which is a breathing disorder where you breathe too quickly.

Who is this pholcodine medicine suitable for?

This medicine is suitable to be used by adults and children aged 6 and over. It should not be used by anyone who is allergic to the ingredients contained in it. It should also not be used by anyone who has or has had any of the following:

  • Liver disease
  • Breathing difficulties
  • A long-term cough
  • A mucus cough
  • Taking Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) or take them in the last 14 days

If you are using any medication for another condition, then speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U before using.

Can someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding use this medicine?

This medicine should not be used by anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding unless they have been told to do so by a medical professional.

How should Numark Pholcodine Linctus be used?

Children aged between 6-12 should take between 2.5ml-5ml or the medicine between 3-4 times a day as needed. For adults and children aged 12 and over, take 5ml-10ml as needed 3-4 times a day. Do not use in conjunction with any other cough medicine.

Are there any side effects?

Because it is a medicine, there is a chance of side effects, in particular as a result of an allergic reaction or overdose. Potential side effects include:

  • Allergic reactions including skin reactions
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling sick
  • Constipation
  • Difficulty breathing

If you get any side effects, stop using and speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist as soon as possible. You can also record any side effect that you notice using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.

Why do I need to answer questions to buy this product?

You do not need a prescription for Numark Pholcodine Linctus, however, you will be asked to complete a short medical questionnaire by your Chemist 4 U pharmacist before we can take your order. This includes some simple questions that all pharmacies legally are required to ask before supplying this kind of product. This helps our pharmacy team to be sure that Pholcodine Linctus is the best choice for you.
