What are Nicotinell 14mg 24 Hour (Step 2) Patches?

These Nicotinell patches are a form of treatment that is designed to be used by someone who is looking to quit smoking. This treatment works by supplying the nicotine that is contained in the cigarettes but in a safer method. The patches contain nicotine that is contained in cigarettes but allows for reducing the amount of nicotine intake over time, aiding in quitting smoking. This is known as Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT). These patches can also be used as a substitute for a cigarette when it is not possible to smoke.

What causes nicotine addiction?

Nicotine addiction is caused by smoking cigarettes to the point where the body becomes dependent on the nicotine to function normally. This is caused by the tobacco in the cigarettes getting into the lungs and from there, the nicotine in the tobacco gets to the brain. This causes the brain to release a neurotransmitter which affects mood and behaviour, dopamine. Dopamine improves the mood and gives off the feeling of pleasure. This is what the body becomes addicted to, and cravings are a result of the body not getting the dopamine release it feels it needs. Cravings are the result and can be triggered by various actions and routines. It can help to know what these are in order to quit smoking.

Who are these nicotine patches suitable for?

These nicotine patches are suitable to be used by adults and children aged 12 and over. They should not be used by anyone who is allergic to the ingredients contained in the patches. If you have a skin disease that could be affected by these patches, do not use them. If any of the following apply to you, speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist for advice before using:

  • Have heart disease
  • Have serious kidney or liver problems
  • Have ever had a stomach ulcer
  • Are diabetic
  • Have an overactive thyroid gland
  • Have a tumour in the adrenal gland

You should also consult a professional if you are currently using any other form of medication.

Can someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding use these patches?

Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding should at first try to quit smoking without using any form of NRT. If this is not possible for any reason, a medical professional should be consulted before using any form of NRT.

How should Nicotinell 14mg 24 Hour (Step 2) Patches be used?

These patches should be used as part of a wider treatment to quit smoking. If you smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day, you should use the step 1 patches before using these ones. If you smoke less than 20 cigarettes a day, start your treatment with these patches. These patches should be used from 3-4 weeks. To use a patch, apply it to a clean area of the skin with no hair. Only use 1 patch a day. Apply a new patch every day and do not apply it to the same area of the skin on consecutive days. Do not use on red or irritated skin. When applying a patch, hold it for 20 seconds to firmly put it in place.
