What is Pepto-Bismol Liquid Suspension?

Pepto-Bismol Liquid Suspension is a soothing remedy used to treat heartburn, nausea, indigestion, an upset stomach, in addition to helping control diarrhoea. It creates a barrier along your stomach and the lower part of your food pipe to protect against the discomfort caused by stomach acid.

How to use this product

Always take Pepto-Bismol exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / Chemist4U pharmacist has told you. A single dose of this medicine is 30ml and you can take it with or without food. Do not take more than 8 doses in 24 hours. To administer, use the measuring cup provided to ensure you are taking the correct amount.

How does bismuth subsalicylate work?

The active ingredient bismuth subsalicylate works by limiting the amount of fluid that travels to your bowel, managing its overactivity. Additionally, it can reduce inflammation in the intestine and kill the organisms that cause diarrhoea.

Is Pepto-Bismol suitable for children?

Do not give this medication to a child under 16 years of age as there may be an association between salicylates and Reye's Syndrome, a very rare but very serious disease. If your child is unwell, speak to a doctor for expert advice and suitable treatments.

Is Pepto-Bismol suitable for pregnant and breastfeeding women?

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, do not use this product. You must ask your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist for advice before using any new medicine.

When should this product not be used?

Pepto-Bismol may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to any of the ingredients as well as aspirin, or if you are currently taking any other salicylates including aspirin. Talk to your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist before taking this medicine if:

  • You are taking blood-thinning medication (anticoagulants)

  • You have diabetes

  • You suffer from gout

  • You are taking any tetracycline antibiotics

Are there any side effects?

Like all medicines, Pepto-Bismol may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness. You may experience a blackening of the tongue or stools, but this is harmless and should go away a few days after the medication is stopped.

If you take too much Pepto-Bismol, you may experience side effects including feeling or being sick, feeling confused, dizzy or tired, deafness or a ringing or buzzing in your ears. You must speak to a doctor or pharmacist if you have taken too much of this medicine.

For more information on potential side effects, refer to the patient information leaflet. If you experience any side effects, including any not included in the patient information leaflet, you can report them using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
