What is Oilesen Vitamin Soft Gel Capsules

Oilesen Vitamin D3 1000 are intended to provide supplementary Vitamin D for children, adolescents and adults, as well as individuals who may avoid sun exposure or are house-bound. They contain Extra Virgin olive oil for immunity and bones.

Why is Vitamin D important?

Vitamin D is important for good health, strong bones and muscles, but what is it and how does it improve our health?

What is Vitamin D?

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is synthesized in our skin when it is exposed to UV-B rays from sunlight. You can also find Vitamin D in foods of animal origin, however, only a few foods contain sufficient amounts of vitamin C to provide a benefit. The best natural food sources of Vitamin D include:

  • Oily fish (such as salmon, herring and eel)
  • Egg yolk
  • Liver
  • Butter
  • Cheese

The government’s National Diet and Nutrition Survey has frequently shown that the UK population are consuming foods that contain low vitamin D and has recommended that people should consider taking a food supplement that contains Vitamin D during Autumn and Winter.

What does it do?

Vitamin D plays many roles in the body, with one of the most important being the enabling of calcium and phosphorus absorption (which are involved in several essential processes that take place within our cells and maintaining adequate concentrations of these minerals in the blood. Vitamin D also promotes bone mineralisation and supports the function of nerves and muscles.

It is very important to infants and young children because it is required for the development of strong and healthy bones and teeth. It is extremely important to we gain a sufficient amount of vitamin D and calcium during childhood and adolescence as this is when bones grow, mineralise and solidify. Good bone mineralisation in childhood and adolescence determines how strong bones are in later life.

Vitamin D for infants and young children

The body does not store much vitamin D and the small amount that is stored is mostly found in the liver and in our body fat. Due to new-born infants having very little body fat, their livers hold almost no vitamin D and, as most new babies are not exposed to much sunlight, they are dependent on vitamin D from breastmilk or formula feed. The amount of vitamin D found in breastmilk varies depending on the vitamin D status of the mother, therefore it has been recommended by the UK Department of Health that babies who are exclusively breastfed should be given a daily vitamin D supplement of 8.5 μg. However, babies who receive more than 500ml of infant formula a day should not be given any additional vitamin supplements as formula milk is fortified with all the nutrients needed.

Who is most at risk of Vitamin D deficiency?

Vitamin D deficiency is very common in the UK due to a lack of adequate sunlight, but some people are more at risk than others:

  • Babies and young children- especially children who spend little time outside
  • People over 65 years of age
  • Anyone who spends very little time outside during the summer
  • People who are housebound
  • People who are obese or significantly overweight
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding woman

How do Oilesen D3 Gel Capsules work?

Warnings

Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. Vitamin D is the most likely of all vitamins to cause toxicity. Although intakes of vitamin D in food that are high enough to cause toxicity are very unlikely, it is much more likely to occur from high intakes of dietary supplements containing vitamin D. Do NOT take more than the recommended dose of 1 capsule per day.
