How does Ranitidine treat Indigestion and Heartburn?

Acid is produced in the stomach which is used to digest food. There are times where the stomach produces more acid than needed which therefore can cause indigestion and/or heartburn.

Ranitidine, which is known as a H2 blocker, works by stopping the stomach from producing too much acid. it reduces the symptoms of acid reflux, they are sometimes known as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD).

What do I need to know before taking Ranitidine?

Do not take if:

  • You are allergic to the active ingredient or any of the other ingredients in this medicine
  • You are under the age of 16

Take caution whilst using this medicine if you:

  • Have previously had trouble swallowing
  • Suffer from kidney or liver problems
  • Have too much pigment which may discolour your urine (porphyria)
  • Experience losing weight without intending to

What to be aware of when taking other medicines:

Make your doctor or pharmacist aware if you are taking or have taken any other medicines, even if they have been purchased without prescription. Do not take this medicine without consulting your doctor if you take medicines to treat conditions such as:

  • Blood clotting
  • Insomnia
  • Fungal infections
  • Lung cancer

Dosage

Adults, the elderly and children over the age of 16 should swallow a single tablet with some water as soon as you feel symptoms coming on. If the tablet does not combat the symptoms in 1 hour, take one (1) more.

Children under the age of 16 are strongly recommended not to take this medicine.

Do not take more than 2 tablets in 24 hours. If you exceed the dosage, contact your doctor or the nearest hospital immediately.

If you miss your dose, carry on taking as normal. Do not double dose to make up for lost medicine.

Side effects and allergic reactions

Stop taking this medicine if you experience any of the following allergic reactions:

  • Hives on the skin
  • If your face, lips, tongue or other body parts start to swell up
  • Pain in the chest, breathing difficulties or wheezing
  • Fever or dizziness, especially when attempting to stand up

Ranitidine in pregnancy

It is recommended that you speak to your doctor or another healthcare professional before purchasing this medicine if you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding.

It is also suggested that you do the same if you are trying to become pregnant, as some of the ingredients in this medicine has been known to affect fertility.
