Numark Sugar Free Pholcodine Linctus – 200ml

What is Numark Sugar Free Pholcodine Linctus?

This is a sugar-free medicine that helps to treat the effects of a dry, non-productive cough. The active ingredient in this medicine is pholcodine, which is a cough suppressant that also provides a mild sedative effect. Pholcodine is an opioid, which means its effect is similar to that of morphine.

Is pholcodine any different to codeine?

Aside from the name, there are differences between the two different drugs, despite them both being used to treat a dry cough. Pholcodine is less likely to cause a dependency of the drug but does have a higher chance of developing breathing difficulties. Codeine is found in more types of treatment as well.

Who is this medicine suitable for?

This medicine is suitable to be used by adults and children aged 6 and over. It should not be used by anyone who has or has had any of the following:

  • Liver disease
  • Breathing difficulties
  • A long-term cough
  • A mucus cough
  • Taking Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) or take them in the last 14 days

If you are using any medication for another condition, then speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U before using.

Can someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding use this medicine?

Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding should speak to a medical professional for advice before using this medicine.

How should this cough medicine be used?

For children aged 6-12, use 5ml up to four times a day. Do not use for more than five days unless told to do so by a doctor. Adults should use 10ml up to six times a day. If symptoms still persist after using, then speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist for advice.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects are possible and can be the result of an allergic reaction or an overdose. The potential side effects include:

  • Allergic reactions including skin reactions
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling sick
  • Constipation
  • Difficulty breathing

If you get any side effects, stop using and speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist as soon as possible. You can also record any side effect that you notice using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
