What are Hay Fever Relief Eye Drops?

Hay fever relief eye drops are a medicated treatment for symptoms of hay fever and other allergies. Just one or two drops in each eye a few times a day will help to ease symptoms such as itchy, red, or watery eyes. If you’re suffering from hay fever symptoms that are making your eyes sore and uncomfortable, these eye drops could help.

How will the sodium cromoglicate in these eye drops help to ease my allergy symptoms?

Sodium cromoglicate eye drops work by preventing the release of histamine, a natural substance which is created in your body when you come into contact with something you’re allergic to. Histamine is the substance which tells different parts of your body to produce symptoms like itchy, watery eyes. By blocking histamine, these eye drops prevent hay fever symptoms effectively and quickly.

What is hay fever?

Hay fever is an allergy where you experience an allergic reaction to pollen, which comes from different kinds of plants. When you have hay fever, you’ll usually notice it in Spring and Summer, when plants release pollen into the air, before it goes away in the colder months. Some of the most common symptoms of hay fever include:

  • Itchy eyes, nose, ears, or throat
  • Watery eyes
  • Red eyes
  • Sneezing
  • A runny or blocked nose
  • Coughing

Can I use these eye drops if I’m wearing contact lenses?

You should not wear soft contact lenses while you’re using this product. These eye drops contain an ingredient called benzalkonium chloride, which can change the colour of soft contact lenses and irritate your eyes. If you wear contact lenses and suffer from hay fever, ask your doctor, pharmacist, or optician to recommend a product that’s right for you.

Can I drive after using these eye drops?

These hay fever relief eye drops can make your vision blurry immediately after using them, although this will usually pass over time. If this happens to you, do not attempt to drive or use any tools or machinery until you are sure that you can see clearly and are safe to do so.

Can I use this product if I’m pregnant?

If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this or any other medication. Some medications may not be suitable for you at this time, but a medical professional can help you to make the best possible choices for you and your baby.

Can I use these eye drops if I’m taking other medication?

If you’re using any other medication, including herbal remedies and medicines you obtained without a prescription, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using this product. Some medications may not be safe to use together, as the combination can make your medication less effective or cause unwanted side effects.

How to use these hay fever eye drops

Before using this product, wash your hands. Remove the cap from the bottle of eye drops and tilt your head backwards. Use one hand to pull down your lower eyelid, and the other hand to gently squeeze the bottle of drops so that 1 – 2  drops fall into the pocket formed between your eye and eyelid. Take care not to touch your eye with the dropper. Close your eye or blink a few times to disperse the drops over the surface of your eye. Repeat process in the other eye if necessary. Do this up to 4 times a day.

When should this product not be used?

Hay fever relief eye drops are not suitable for use in children under the age of 6. Do not use this product if you are allergic to sodium cromoglicate or any of the other listed ingredients. For use in the eyes only.

Do these sodium cromoglicate eye drops have any side effects?

Like all medications, sodium cromoglicate hay fever eye drops can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction, or the symptoms you already have get worse, stop use and speak to a doctor as soon as possible:

  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Swelling of the eyelids, face, tongue or throat
  • Rash
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing

Other side effects you may experience include:

  • Stinging or burning in the eyes or blurred eyesight, this will usually only last for a short time and will stop when you stop using these eye drops
  • Mild eye irritation

If you experience these or any other side effects while using this product, speak to your doctor or pharmacist. For more information about reporting the side effects of medication, please see the MHRA’s Yellow Card Scheme.
