What are Nicotinell 21mg 24 Hour (Step 1) Patches?
Nicotinell Step 1 Patches are a treatment that is intended to work as a treatment for quitting smoking. The active ingredient in these patches to assist in quitting smoking is nicotine. Nicotine is the drug in the cigarette that causes addiction to smoke. This works by replacing the nicotine in smoking with a healthier option, and aids in reducing the cravings and reliance on nicotine over time. This is known as Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT). Besides being a form of NRT, these patches can be used as a replacement of a cigarette when smoking is not possible.
What causes nicotine addiction?
Nicotine addiction is the result of smoking over time and development dependency on the contents of a cigarette. When smoking a cigarette, the tobacco enters the body and into the lungs. From there, the nicotine goes to the brain and causes a neurotransmitter to be released. The neurotransmitter that is released is dopamine, which improves the mood and gives a feeling of pleasure. Over time, the body craves the release of dopamine, which causes withdrawal symptoms when not smoking.
Who are these patches suitable for?
These Nicotinell patches are suitable to be used by adults and children aged 12 and over. They should not be used by anyone who is allergic to the ingredients contained in the patches. Do not use if you have a skin condition that could potentially cause a reaction when applying the patches. Speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using if any of the following apply to you:
- Have heart disease
- Have serious liver or kidney problems
- Have ever had a stomach ulcer
- Are diabetic
- Have an overactive thyroid
- Have a tumour in the adrenal gland
You should also seek advice if you are currently using any other form of medication.
Can someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding use these patches?
Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding should attempt to quit smoking without using any form of NRT. If this is not possible for any reason, then consult a medical professional for advice on what NRT treatment to use.
How should Nicotinell 21mg 24 Hour (Step 1) Patches be used?
These patches should be used once a day and applied at the same time. When applying, do not apply to the same area of the skin for 7 consecutive days. Make sure that the area of skin that a patch is applied to is clean and free of hair. These patches should be used if you are smoking more than 20 cigarettes a day for 3-4 weeks before moving onto the Nicotinell Step 2 Patches. If you smoke less than 20 cigarettes a day, then it is recommended that you start with the Step 2 Patches.
