What is nappy rash?

Nappy rash is a very common problem with around a third of babies and toddlers experiencing it. It causes red patches to form on the baby’s bottom that may look sore and feel hot when touched. Nappy rash can also cause spots or blisters to appear around the affected area. Most cases of nappy rash do not cause pain, however if the rash is severe it can cause discomfort and distress. There are many reasons why your baby may be experiencing nappy rash. Common causes include:

  • Skin being in contact with urine (wee) or faeces (poo) for extended periods of time

  • Friction caused by the nappy rubbing against the skin

  • Not cleaning the nappy area or changing the nappy often enough

  • Soaps, detergents and bubble baths

  • Baby wipes that contain alcohol

  • The use of antibiotics

How to treat nappy rash

Most cases of nappy rash clear up within a few days and you can usually treat it yourself by applying a barrier cream or spray like Metanium and by ensuring you are incorporating these hygiene tips into your baby’s routine:

  • Change wet or dirty nappies as soon as possible

  • Clean the entire nappy area thoroughly, ensuring you wipe from front to back

  • Avoid wipes that contain fragrance or alcohol and instead choose wipes that are water based

  • Bath your baby once daily

  • Dry your baby gently after bathing - avoid rubbing the skin

  • Allow the skin to breathe by lying your baby on a towel and keeping their nappy off for as long and as often as possible

  • Avoid using harsh soaps, bubble baths or lotions

  • Avoid talcum powder as it can irritate the skin

Is it nappy rash or a condition?

It is common to mistake skin conditions and rashes for nappy rash, so it is important to know the difference between common minor skin irritations and skin conditions that may need to be managed.Common skin conditions that can be found in babies include:

  • Baby acne - can affect babies in the first few weeks of life and often develops on the cheeks and forehead

  • Eczema - causes the skin to become itchy, dry, red and cracked and often affects areas where the skin folds such as behind the knees, elbows, the neck and around the eyes and ears

  • Hand, foot and mouth - causes a rash on the hands or feet and ulcers on and around the mouth

  • Hives - raised, red and very itchy rash that is triggered by an allergic reaction

  • Impetigo - skin infection caused by bacteria that causes a rash and blisters that burst to leave thick, yellow crusts.

  • Keratosis pilaris - common, harmless and non-contagious condition which causes areas of the skin to appear like it is permanently covered in goose pimples

  • Meningitis - an infection caused by bacteria or a virus which affect the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord

  • Milia - pearly white spots that appear on the face and are caused by pores becoming blocked with flakes of skin

  • Prickly heat - a rash made up of tiny spots or bumps that are surrounded by an area of red skin

How can Metanium help to prevent nappy rash?

Metanium Spray cares for your child’s delicate skin by forming a protective layer that protects the skin from irritants that can cause nappy rash. Its caring formulation helps to seal in the skin’s natural moisture to keep it hydrated, which keeps the skin soft and smooth. Metanium’s oil-based formula doesn’t contain colours, fragrances or lanolin so is safe to use daily at every nappy change. The spray format makes this product easy to administer, as just two pumps are all that is needed to provide protection from nappy rash without the need to rub in and one bottle can las up to 30 days.

How to use this product

Use Metanium at every nappy change on skin that is clean and dry. Shake the bottle well before use. Spray a thin layer onto the skin from a distance of around 20 - 30cm. 2 pumps of the spray should be enough to cover the affected area. Pat around the area where you have applied the product to maximise the coverage of the product - avoid rubbing as this can irritate the skin.
