How to treat bite and stings
Bites and stings can be very uncomfortable but are usually easy to treat.
Basic Bite and Sting First Aid
- Remove the sting, tick or hairs if they remain in the skin
- Wash the area of the bite or sting with soap and water
- Apply a cold compress or an ice pack to the affected area for at least 10 minutes to reduce any swelling
- If the bite or sting has occurred on a part of your body that can be raised or elevated, do so to help reduce swelling
- Avoid scratching or bursting any blisters that may have been caused by the bite or sting as this can cause infection
- When using remedies to soothe the bite or sting, avoid home remedies and instead seek remedies from your pharmacist like Jungle Formula Bite and Sting Patches
How to remove stings
If the sting has been left behind after the insect has stung you, such as a bee sting, you should remove it immediately to prevent any more venom being released and causing irritation. Scrape the sting out of the skin by using something with a hard edge, such as a bank card or clean fingernails and scrape sideways. Do NOT pinch the sting with fingers or tweezers as you may spread the venom.
How to remove ticks
Ticks can spread a serious illness called Lyme Disease, so it is important to remove it as soon as possible. Use a pair of tweezers that will not squash the tick or a tick removal tool and grip the tick as close to the skin as possible, to ensure that the tick’s mouth isn’t left behind in the skin. Pull the tick steadily away from the skin, taking care not to crush the tick as you remove it. Wash your skin with soap and water after removal and apply an antiseptic cream to the skin around the bite.
