What is Hypromellose Eye Drops?

Hypromellose Eye Drops is a treatment for dry, irritated eyes. They lubricate the eyes, relieving dryness and making your eyes feel more comfortable. They’re perfect for those who don’t produce enough tears to hydrate their eyes or suffer from dry eyes for many other reasons.

Why do I suffer from dry eyes?

Dry eyes are a really common condition, with many people suffering from dry, irritated eyes every day. There are lots of different causes of dry eyes, including:

  • Wearing contact lenses
  • Staring at computer screens for long periods
  • Being over the age of 50
  • Windy, cold, dry, or dusty weather
  • Spending time in air-conditioned or heated environments
  • Certain medications and medical conditions
  • Smoking
  • Drinking alcohol

How will Hypromellose Eye Drops soothe my dry eyes?

Hypromellose eye drops help to soothe dry eyes by lubricating them, keeping them feeling clean and hydrated. They’re part of a group of medications known as artificial tears, which means that they work similarly to your natural tears, lubricating the surface of the eye and easing dryness or pain.

Can I use these eye drops if I’m using other medication?

If you’re using other medication, including those you obtained without a prescription, speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using this product. This especially applies to eye drops or eye ointments.

Can I use this product if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, you should speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using this or any other medication. Some medications may not be suitable for you or your baby at this time, and a medical professional may recommend another product.

Can I drive after using this product?

When you’ve used Hypromellose Eye Drops you may experience blurred vision. Do not attempt to drive or operate tools or machinery unless you are sure that you are not affected in this way.

Can I use these eye drops if I’m wearing contact lenses?

You shouldn’t use these eye drops if you’re wearing contact lenses. If you’re experiencing dry or irritated eyes and wear contact lenses, speak to your doctor, optician, or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using this product, they may need to recommend another more suitable product.

How to use these eye drops

Before using this product, make sure to wash your hands thoroughly. Remove the cap from the drops, tilt your head back and look up at the ceiling. Use one hand to gently pull your lower eyelid down, forming a small pocket between your eye and eyelid. Hold the bottle above your eye and squeeze gently to deposit 1 – 2 drops into your eye. Blink a few times and then repeat the process in the other eye if necessary. Do this up to 3 times a day, or as recommended by your doctor.

When should Hypromellose Eye Drops not be used?

Do not use Hypromellose Eye Drops if you are allergic to Hypromellose or any of the other listed ingredients. Speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist if any of the following happens while using this treatment:

  • You develop an eye infection
  • Your eye irritation persists or gets worse
  • You get a headache or eye pain
  • Your vision changes
  • You have permanently red eyes

Does this product have any side effects?

Like all medications, Hypromellose Eye Drops can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. These include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Eye pain
  • Feeling like there is a foreign body in your eyes
  • Eye irritation
  • Redness of your eyes

If you experience these or any other side effects while using this product, stop use and speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting the side effects of medication, please see the MHRA’s Yellow Card Scheme.
