What are Piriton tablets?

Piriton is an allergy tablet containing the active ingredient chlorphenamine maleate, an antihistamine. They are used to control symptoms caused by allergic conditions, including hayfever, hives, food allergy and insect bites. Piriton can also be used for relieving itchiness associated with chickenpox.

Active ingredients per tablet: Chlorphenamine Maleate 4 mg.

How does an antihistamine work?

An antihistamine works by stopping histamines that are produced by the body. A histamine is produced when the body detects an infection. However, allergies are formed because the body thinks that something harmful has come into contact with the body. This causes the symptoms that are associated with the allergy. Using an antihistamine before coming into contact with what causes the allergic reaction will reduce the symptoms that appear.

How should Piriton antihistamine tablets be used?

Piriton tablets are to be taken by mouth only. Not recommended for children under the age of 6 years.

The recommended Piriton dose for Adults and children over 12 years is 1 tablet every 4 to 6 hours. Do not exceed 6 tablets (24mg) in any 24 hours.

Elderly: The elderly are more likely to experience neurological anticholinergic effects, such as blurred vision, dry mouth, flushing and hyperthermia. Consider taking a lower daily dose, e.g. a maximum of 12 mg in any 24 hours.

Children aged 6-12 years: Half tablet to be taken every 4 to 6 hours. Do not exceed 3 tablets (12mg) in any 24 hours.

When should Piriton tablets be used?

Piriton is indicated for symptomatic relief of all allergic conditions responsive to antihistamines, e.g hay fever, runny nose, sneezing, hives, angioneurotic oedema (rapid swelling of the dermis), food allergy, drug and serum reactions and insect bites.

When should Piriton antihistamine tablets not be used?

Piriton tablets should not be used by anyone who is sensitive to antihistamines or any of the ingredients. Consult your GP before use if you have any other medical conditions, including, but not limited to:

  • Epilepsy
  • Glaucoma
  • Prostatic hypertrophy
  • High blood pressure
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Bronchitis
  • Asthma
If you notice a side effect, then you should speak to a doctor as soon as possible. You can also report any side effect by using the MHRA's Yellow Card scheme.

Do I need a prescription to order?

No, you don’t need a prescription from your GP to buy Piriton tablets online. They are, however, a Pharmacy Only medicine, meaning that they can only be purchased under the supervision of a pharmacist. This means that you will need to answer a few health-related questions before you can place your order. Equally, if bought from your local pharmacy, your pharmacist would need to ask you a few questions before your purchase.

Your answers will be used by our pharmacists to make sure this treatment is suitable for you. Certain medicines or conditions may impact the suitability of the product and may cause side effects. When our pharmacists review your answers, this is the sort of information they are looking for. If the Piriton tablets seem suitable for you to use, they will be dispensed from our pharmacy and delivered to your chosen address.

Can I take these tablets if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

No, Piriton tablets should not be taken if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Please consult your GP if you believe you are in need of antihistamines such as Piriton.

Can I drink alcohol when I’m taking Piriton antihistamine tablets?
