What is Dermol 200 Shower Emollient?

Dermol 200 is an emollient for dry skin that also has antimicrobial properties that work to kill bacteria on the skin causing skin problems. This shower emollient contains 4 active ingredients that provide relief. These ingredients are:

  • Liquid paraffin
  • Benzalkonium chloride
  • Isopropyl myristate
  • Chlorhexidine dihydrochloride

Liquid paraffin and isopropyl myristate are both emollients that soften and moisturise the skin as well as forming a protective barrier that helps to reduce the effects of dry skin. Benzalkonium and chlorhexidine are both antibacterial chemicals that will combat bacteria on the skin that can make eczema worse and that causes itching.

What can cause eczema to become infected?

Eczema can become infected if it causes the skin to become cracked or broken. This opens up the skin to bacteria which can get into the skin and cause an infection. Potential symptoms of an infection include:

  • Fluid coming out of the skin
  • A yellow crust on the skin surface
  • Small yellow spots appearing on the skin
  • Swollen and sore skin
  • Fever and feeling unwell

In many cases, eczema will become worse when infection and the standard treatments may stop working as well.

Who is this Dermol 200 treatment suitable for?

This shower emollient is suitable to be used by adults and children who shower normally. It should not be used by anyone who is allergic to the ingredients contained in the emollient. If you are using any other form of medication, then this emollient can be used as it doesn’t interfere with any medication.

Can someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding use this Dermol treatment?

This Dermol treatment is safe to use when pregnant or breastfeeding as there are no known issues when using it.

How should Dermol 200 Shower Emollient be used?

To use it in the shower, squeeze some of the solution into your hands and then gently apply it to the affected areas of the skin. Allow time for it to soak into the skin for the best treatment. Do not rub vigorously on the skin. Use it as often as needed. If you are also using another skin treatment, leave enough time between using both as they could interfere with each other. Besides using it as a shower gel, this emollient can also be used as soap for relief of infected skin. After washing using Dermol 200, gently pat the skin dry with a soft towel. This is so the skin doesn’t become irritated.

Are there any side effects to using this emollient?

As with many types of medication, there is a chance of side effects. Potential side effects include swelling in the face, lips, or mouth, as well as feeling faint or dizzy. If you notice any side effect, then stop using this emollient and speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist as soon as possible. You can also record any side effect that you notice using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
