What is E45 Nappy Cream?

E45 Nappy Cream is a nappy rash barrier cream that protects against the causes of nappy rash. The triple-action formula soothes and helps to protect against the causes of nappy rash. The formula absorbs urine away from the skin which prevents irritation, as well as protecting and moisturising the skin. It’s light, perfume-free formula, absorbs into your baby’s skin quickly, for fuss-free application. E45 Cream has been tested by both dermatologist and paediatricians and is hypoallergenic, so it is caring for even the most sensitive skin.

What is nappy rash?

According to the NHS, up to a third of babies and toddlers in nappies have nappy rash at any one time. Although it’s not a common problem for newborns, all babies can get nappy rash.

Symptoms

Symptoms of nappy rash can include:

  • Red patches on your baby’s bottom or on the whole area that the nappy covers
  • Skin may look sore
  • Skin feels hot to touch
  • Spots, pimples or blisters

Most cases of mild nappy rash don’t feel sore, but if the rash is severe, your baby may feel uncomfortable and be distressed.

Causes

Nappy rash can be caused by a variety of factors including:

  • Skin being in contact with urine (wee) or faeces (poo) for a long time
  • Nappies rubbing against skin
  • Not cleaning the nappy area or changing the nappy often enough
  • Some soaps, detergents and bubble baths
  • Alcohol-based baby wipes
  • Recently taking antibiotics

Treatment

You can treat symptoms of nappy rash at home. If the rash isn’t upsetting your baby, apply a thin layer of barrier cream to protect the skin at each nappy change. If the rash is causing discomfort use a nappy rash cream, to treat the affected area, wait a few minutes then apply the barrier cream.

When to see a doctor

If symptoms of nappy rash persist or your baby develops a bright red, moist rash with white or red pimples that spread into the folds, they may have an infection. Seek advice from your GP or a Chemist 4 U pharmacist if your baby is experiencing any of these symptoms.

If the rash is severe, take your baby to your GP and follow their instructions on what treatment to take and ask if nappy barrier creams, like E45 nappy cream, can be used with the prescribed treatment.

How to prevent nappy rash

There are many steps you can take to prevent your child from developing a nappy rash. Follow these simple steps to look after your baby’s delicate skin.

  • Change wet or dirty nappies as soon as possible.
  • Clean the whole nappy area gently but thoroughly, wiping from front to back
  • Use water or wipes that do not contain fragrance or alcohol
  • Use a barrier cream to protect your baby’s delicate skin
  • Bath your baby daily- but avoid bathing them more than twice in a day as this can cause dry skin
  • Dry your baby gently after bathing- avoid vigorous rubbing
  • Lie your baby on a towel and leave their nappy off for as long and as often as you can to let fresh air get to their skin
  • Do not use soap, bubble bath or lotions
  • Do not use talcum powder as it contains ingredients that could irritate your baby’s skin

How will E45 Nappy Cream help to protect nappy rash?

The most common cause for nappy rash is when your baby’s skin comes into contact with urine and faeces in the nappy. E45 Nappy Cream forms a breathable barrier to keep the skin dry and healthy. The triple-action formula works by absorbing urine away from the skin, neutralising irritants and protecting the skin. This gentle formula is perfume-free, hypoallergenic and is Dermatologist and Paediatrician tested, so is safe for your baby’s delicate skin.
