How do oral thrush treatments work?

Oral thrush is a fungal infection, otherwise known as a yeast infection, that affects your mouth, tongue, and throat.

It’s caused by a type of yeast known as candida, the same type of fungi that causes genital thrush and other fungal infections in the body.

Candida naturally occurs in your body, but it's usually balanced by the good bacteria you produce. However, if this system is put out of balance, (for example, if you’re taking antibiotics or getting chemotherapy) then candida can grow and thrive, causing a thrush infection.

Thankfully, we have a range of oral thrush prescription treatments like Nystan and Nystatin. These medicines belong to a group called antifungal antibiotics and are very effective at preventing and treating fungal infections (thrush) of the mouth and throat, working by killing the yeast or fungus causing your unpleasant oral thrush symptoms.

Simply complete a quick and easy consultation and one of our prescribers will decide what oral thrush treatment is right for you.
