What age should children start wearing sun cream?
It’s recommended to only use sunscreen when your baby is at least 6 months old. This is because their skin is very delicate and thinner than adult skin, which could result in them developing a rash or irritation. The NHS advises that you should keep babies under 6 months out of direct sunlight. When your child is aged 6 months and over, you should start applying sunscreen with a high SPF (between 30 and 50+) and keep their skin covered with breathable clothes, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
What is SPF and how does it protect against sun damage?
SPF stands for sun protection factor and it measures how well a suncare product will protect your skin against UVB rays, the type which causes sunburn, skin damage and potentially skin cancer. The number refers to how long you can stay in the sun without damage from UVB rays. So, for example, SPF 15 means you could stay in the sun for 15x longer than you usually could without burning. You should, however, reapply your sunscreen every 2 hours regardless of the SPF rating.
What is broad spectrum protection?
While SPF does a good job of protecting the skin against the UVB rays which cause sunburn, you need to make sure your sunscreen also offers protection against UVA rays by choosing a product with ‘broad spectrum’ protection. UVA rays are the primary cause of premature ageing and can contribute to the development of skin cancer. What’s more, UVA rays are able to penetrate through cloud cover and glass, and they’re present at consistent levels throughout the whole year.
