How does methylcellulose work?

These tablets are designed to absorb water and increase size, creating bulk in the stomach and bowel area of the body.

This helps to re-establish normal bowel function, allowing stools to pass correctly. Methylcellulose controls the consistency of faeces, which can benefit those suffering from colostomy or ileostomy.

This medicine can also be used to reduce appetite. By giving the feeling of fullness, this medicine effective in reducing weight for obesity.

 

What should I be aware of about Senna Tablets?

Do not take Celevac if:

  • You are allergic to the active ingredient
  • Your doctor has told you that you may suffer from bowel obstruction, faecal impaction, or colonic atony
  • You have diarrhoea
  • You’ve got difficulty swallowing

Taken too much?

If you take more methylcellulose than recommended, contact your doctor or the local hospital immediately.

Missed a dose?

Take the next dose as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time to take the next dose.

 

Can I use this medicine if pregnant?

If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or breastfeeding as your doctor for advice before taking this medicine. The active ingredient in this medicine may pass down to breast milk and therefore cannot be fed to newborn babies.

 

How should methylcellulose be taken?

The tablets can be broken up in the mouth before swallowing. Make sure that the right amount of liquid is consumed for your condition.

For constipation: take 3 to 6 tablets, two times a day with at least half a pint of liquid. You can start to lower the dose once your bowels start working normally again.

For colostomy, ileostomy and diarrhoea: take 3 to 6 tablets, two times a day with as little liquid as possible.

It is recommended to not drink for 30 minutes before or after taking this medicine.

 

Does this medicine have any side effects?

Like all medicines, this medicine can have side effects. Listed below are several side effects which may occur:

  • Flatulence
  • Stomach bloating
  • Abdominal cramps or stomach aches
  • Pain in the rectum when going to the toiletAllergic reaction

Rarely, the adverse effect of this medicine is that the bowels become blocked (obstructed). If you think that has happened to you, contact your doctor or the nearest hospital immediately.
