Simeticone

Trapped wind can be very uncomfortable, or even painful in some cases, as your stomach tries to relieve that built-up gas. Read More See less

Simeticone can help relieve trapped wind by bringing all of those little gas bubbles together, making them easier to pass through your body and easing your discomfort.

As colic is considered to be caused by trapped wind, simeticone can also be found in colic remedies like those from Infacol, which is kind to little tummies and can help them to sleep comfortably.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does simeticone have side effects?

Like all medications, simeticone can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them.

These include nausea, constipation, or side effects caused by an allergic reaction.

Symptoms of a severe allergic reaction include:

  • Skin rash, hives
  • Itchy skin
  • Swelling of the face, tongue, mouth, or throat
  • Difficulty breathing

If you notice any side effects while taking simeticone, stop use and speak to your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible, if necessary.

Is simethicone suitable for children or babies?

Some formulas of simethicone can be suitable for babies, but this doesn’t apply to every simethicone product as it may be mixed with other active ingredients which are not child friendly.

If you think your child needs simethicone to ease their trapped wind, speak to your doctor or pharmacist so they can recommend a product that’s suitable for them.

For example, if your baby has colic, your doctor may recommend Infacol drops to ease their tummy and make them feel more comfortable, which may help to relieve colic but should only be used under medical supervision.

Can I take simeticone during pregnancy?

If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, you should only use simethicone if your doctor has told you to do so.

If you are suffering from wind or indigestion during pregnancy and need a medicine that can help, speak to your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

What’s the usual dose of simeticone?

The dose of simeticone that’s right for you will depend on two things; your age, and the medication you’re taking.

The amount of simeticone included can differ from product to product, and children will usually need to take smaller doses than adults if they can take simethicone at all.

For detailed information about what your dosage should be, read the patient information leaflet that comes with your product carefully.

If you’re unsure about how much of any medication you should be taking, or whether it’s right for you or your child, speak to your doctor or pharmacist for information.
