Frequently Asked Questions

How long does threadworm treatment take to work?

The recommended treatment for threadworms is mebendazole, a type of medicine used to treat parasitic worm infections. It works by preventing the worms from absorbing sugar (glucose), so the worms lose their energy and die within just a few days.

How do you get threadworm?

Threadworms are spread through poor hand hygiene. You or your child can get threadworms by accidentally swallowing worm eggs from contaminated surfaces. This can happen if you don’t wash your hands after using the toilet, followed by touching your mouth or food.

Can I treat threadworms at home?

Yes, threadworms can be treated easily at home with mebendazole, a medicine that will treat parasitic worm infections within just a few days. You can buy products to treat treadworms over the counter from trustworthy brands like Ovex. In the meantime, it’s important to practise good hand hygiene to prevent the spread of infection.

What are the symptoms of threadworms?

The main symptoms of threadworms are visible white threads in your faeces and intsense itching around your bottom. Less common symptoms include weight loss, wetting the bed and irritated skin around the bottom.

What is threadworm?

Threadworm, which is also known as pinworm, is an uncomfortable condition that’s usually more common in children than adults.

It happens when your large intestine becomes infected with little, parasitic threadworms, making you feel uncomfortable and itchy.

You may not notice any symptoms right away, but if you or your child have threadworm then you may wake up more at night, or notice the worms in your poo.
