Frequently Asked Questions

What is echinacea?

Echinacea is a purple, flowering plant from the daisy family.

There are a few breeds of echinacea, but the one used as a herbal cold remedy is echinacea purpurea, also known as the purple coneflower.

The plants originate in North America, where they have a history of use as herbal remedies by indigenous peoples from as early as the 18th century.

Does echinacea have side effects?

Like many medications and herbal remedies, echinacea can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them.

These include symptoms of an allergic reaction, which may be severe, including but not limited to itching, hives, and swelling of the face, mouth, or throat.

If you experience any side effects while taking echinacea, stop use and speak to your doctor or pharmacist immediately if necessary.

For a complete list of potential side effects, you should read the patient information leaflet that comes with your own product.

Can I take echinacea if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding you should not take echinacea products.

Although echinacea is a natural remedy, there is always a risk that accompanies taking medicines of any type during pregnancy.

If you’re suffering from a cold or the flu at this time, speak to your doctor, pharmacist, or health visitor so they can recommend a suitable remedy for you.

Is echinacea suitable for kids?

Echinacea is not suitable for children under the age of 12.

If your child is suffering from cold and flu symptoms, speak to your doctor or pharmacist so they can suggest a suitable remedy for them.
