Can I use clove oil for wisdom teeth?
Although clove oil is an ideal remedy for toothache, it may not be the most effective way to soothe pain caused by wisdom teeth growing in.
This is because clove oil should not be applied to skin or gums, so if your tooth has not yet grown through the gum, then you may not be able to apply clove oil to the tooth itself.
However, if you’re experiencing a toothache in a wisdom tooth that has already emerged, you can use clove oil to soothe it.
If you’re experiencing pain from a growing wisdom tooth and need pain relief, speak to your doctor, dentist, or pharmacist so they can recommend a more suitable product.
Does clove oil have any side effects?
Like all medications, clove oil can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them.
Some of the most common side effects include:
- Temporary irritation if accidentally applied to the skin
- Skin reactions, e.g. rash, itching, flaking
- Swelling of the lips, throat, or face
- Blistering and swelling in the mouth
- Becoming sensitive to clove oil

How long does clove oil last for toothache?
When you use clove oil to soothe a toothache, the duration of the pain relief can last for a different amount of time from person to person.
However, many people find that clove oil eases their pain for 2 – 3 hours, at which point they can apply the clove oil again for further relief.
How to use clove oil for toothache
If you have toothache, it’s best to book in at your local dentist to get it checked out - but if you need a temporary fix for that nagging pain, clove oil is a great solution.
Clove oil works by numbing the nerve tissue due to its natural anaesthetic properties.
Care must be taken when applying, for example, do not pour the clove oil directly onto the affected area; if it reaches your gums or tongue, it could worsen the pain.
Use a cotton ball to soak up the clove oil and hold it against the affected area for 20 minutes.
If you don’t have clove oil available, you can use powdered clove or try chewing a whole clove with the affected tooth; oil from the clove should be released to soothe the pain.
