Cialis tablets are a treatment for erectile dysfunction, which is also known as impotence or ED. Using an ingredient called tadalafil, this medication helps you to get and maintain an erection when you’re sexually stimulated. You can take these tablets any time, unlike other erectile dysfunction treatments, so you won’t have to worry about interrupting intimate moments to make sure you’ve taken your medication. If you’re someone who wants to have sex a few times a week or more but is struggling with erectile dysfunction, Cialis could be just what you need to keep your sex life working like it should.

How tadalafil works

The active ingredient in Cialis tablets is called tadalafil and it works to make it easier for you to get an erection. It relaxes the blood vessels in your penis so blood can flow into the area more easily. This helps you to get an erection when you’re engaging in foreplay and will make it easier for you to keep it during intercourse. You don’t need to worry about knowing when you’re planning on having sex, as long as you take tadalafil properly it will work to combat your erectile dysfunction at any time of the day.

Directions

Take one Cialis tablet at the same time every day, swallowing it with a sip of water. You can take these tablets with or without food. Do not take more than one tablet a day.

Side effects

Like all medications, Cialis can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Common side effects you may experience when taking this medication include:

  • Headaches
  • Back pain
  • Muscle aches
  • Pain in your arms or legs
  • Flushing in your face
  • Congestion (a blocked nose)
  • Indigestion

For a complete list of potential side effects of this medication, please read the patient information leaflet included with your tablets. If you experience these or any other side effects while taking this product, speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting the side effects of medication, please see the MHRA’s Yellow Card Scheme.

Serious side effects

If you experience any of the following serious side effects you should stop using this medication and seek immediate medical help:

  • Symptoms of a severe allergic reaction, e.g. rashes, difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, or throat
  • Chest pain
  • A prolonged erection which lasts for longer than 4 hours and may be painful
  • Sudden loss of vision

Warnings

Cialis tablets are not suitable for use in those under the age of 18. This medication should not be taken by those who were assigned female at birth. Do not take Cialis if you are allergic to tadalafil or any of the other listed ingredients in this medication. You should not take Cialis if you have:

  • Serious heart disease or have had a heart attack within the last 90 days
  • Had a stroke within the last 6 months
  • Low blood pressure or uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Ever had loss of vision caused by a “stroke of the eye” (non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy or NAION)

Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medication if you:

  • Have heart disease
  • Have prostate problems, including prostate cancer
  • Have sickle cell anaemia
  • Have multiple myeloma
  • Have leukaemia
  • Have any deformation of the penis
  • Have a serious liver or kidney problem
  • Have had pelvic surgery
  • Have had all or part of your prostate gland removed

Other medication

If you’re taking any other medication, including herbal remedies or medications obtained without a prescription, you should tell your prescriber about this during your first consultation. You should not take Cialis if you are already taking:

  • Nitrates, which are used to treat chest pain or angina
  • Riociguat, which is used to treat high blood pressure in your lungs

Make sure to tell your prescriber during your consultation if you are taking:

  • Alpha-blockers, which are used to treat high blood pressure or urinary problems associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia
  • Medicines used to treat high blood pressure
  • A 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, which is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia
  • Ketoconazole, which is used to treat fungal infections
  • Protease inhibitors, which are used to treat HIV and AIDS
  • Phenobarbital, phenytoin, and carbamazepine, which are anticonvulsants
  • Rifampicin, erythromycin, clarithromycin, or itraconazole
  • Any other erectile dysfunction treatments

Alcohol

You should avoid drinking alcohol while you’re taking Cialis or have erectile dysfunction issues in general. Alcohol can lower your blood pressure, making it more difficult for you to get an erection, which is why many men find that they suffer from ED after drinking. Naturally, this change in your blood pressure can reduce the effect of this medication, so you can still find it difficult to become and stay erect after drinking, even while you’re taking Cialis. Excessive drinking can also increase the chances of you feeling dizzy when you stand up while taking these tablets.

Driving

You can sometimes feel dizzy after taking tadalafil, but this can differ from person to person. Feeling dizzy and other side effects can affect your vision and your ability to concentrate, which can both affect your ability to drive or use heavy machinery. If you’re taking Cialis for the first time, make sure you take your first dose when you know that you don’t have to drive or use machines for a while, as this will give you the chance to see how this medication affects you. If you feel dizzy or experience any other side effects which could affect your ability to drive you should not do so until your symptoms have passed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can tadalafil be used to treat anything else?

Tadalafil tablets can be used to treat a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia, which is common in men as they get older.

When you have this condition, it means that your prostate gets bigger as you get older, which can make it more difficult for you to pee.

Tadalafil improves blood flow in your prostate, just like it does in your penis, helping it to relax and making it easier for you to pee.

What is the difference between tadalafil and sildenafil (Viagra)?

Sildenafil is the active ingredient in the popular erectile dysfunction treatment, Viagra, and many men use it to manage their condition.

The biggest difference between sildenafil and the tadalafil in this product is that you will need to know when you’re planning on having sex when you’re taking sildenafil, as you need to take your tablet around an hour before you get down to business.

This can sometimes ruin the mood if you’re the more spontaneous type and could cause problems if you’re out and about and forget to bring a tablet with you for when the mood strikes.

On the other hand, tadalafil is taken once a day, at the same time every day, and will work to help you get an erection at any time, day or night.

However, there is one more thing to consider, and that is how you will get hold of your treatment.

Tadalafil tablets need a prescription from a medical professional before you can get them, whereas sildenafil can be bought over the counter after a quick chat with a pharmacist.

If you’re unsure which would be best for you, we recommend talking it over with your doctor, they can help to point you in the right direction.

Will tadalafil affect my fertility?

Studies have shown that some men who take tadalafil can experience a reduction in sperm production.

However, this is unlikely to lead to a lack of fertility.

If you are trying to conceive, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.

Will Cialis make me get an erection even if I don’t want one?

No, you won’t automatically get an erection after taking Cialis tablets.

This treatment only works when you’re sexually stimulated, making it easier for you to get an erection during foreplay and keep it throughout intercourse with your partner.

With that in mind, you shouldn’t worry about getting an erection at inappropriate times while you’re using this ED medication.

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction, also known as impotence or ED, is a common condition that affects one in ten men at one point or another. Erectile dysfunction means that you have trouble getting or maintaining an erection, even when sexually stimulated.

Do I need a prescription for this medication?

You do need a prescription for this medication in the UK.

Our healthcare professionals can provide prescriptions if they think this treatment would be right for you and your condition.

When you click the button which reads “Start Consultation” at the top of this page, you’ll see a short questionnaire set up by our healthcare team which is designed to help them understand your medical needs.
