Frequently Asked Questions

How often should you bathe your baby?

A newborn baby shouldn’t get too dirty, so there’s no need to bathe them every day - doing so can actually dry out their skin.

As a general rule, you shouldn't bathe your baby more than 3 times per week, but you can reduce or exceed this amount if you wish - baby’s are unpredictable, after all.

When your baby gets older, they will require more bathing as they explore and play, but this should increase naturally.

What is cradle cap?

Cradle cap is a harmless skin condition that causes babies to have patches of greasy and yellow crusts on their heads.

It can also affect other parts of the body, like the eyebrows, nose and nappy area.

To get rid of cradle cap, wash your baby’s hair regularly with mild, unperfumed baby shampoo and gently loosen the flakes with a soft brush.

You can also rub baby oil or vegetable oil to help soften the crusts, or leave petroleum jelly on overnight before washing their hair in the morning.

Can you prevent cradle cap?

No, you can’t prevent cradle cap because the cause of the condition isn’t fully known.

It is thought that cradle cap is caused by hormones from the mother that cross the placenta before birth.

These hormones may cause the oil glands in the skin to become overactive, leading to an overproduction of oil.

How do you use cradle cap treatments?

If you’re using a cradle cap treatment like Colief Baby Scalp Oil, simply pour some of the product into your hands and gently massage it into your baby’s scalp.

Do this as often as needed to moisturise their scalp.
