Frequently Asked Questions

Can I catch thrush from my baby while breastfeeding?

Yes, it is possible to catch thrush from your baby while breastfeeding.

If your baby has oral thrush then the regular contact between yourself and your baby means that you could also develop a yeast infection in your breasts or nipples.

This is why your doctor may also want to test your breasts for thrush if your infant has a yeast infection in their mouth.

It’s not unusual for both a breastfeeding mother and their baby to have thrush at the same time.

What causes stretch marks?

Stretch marks are long, thin lines that can be red or purple in colour, and white once they’ve faded.

They develop on areas such as the hips, abdomen, breasts, and buttocks, but they can appear almost anywhere on the body.

They appear where there has been weight gain or loss and the skin has been stretched, like during pregnancy.

What is nappy rash?

Nappy rash is a common problem that causes red patches on a baby’s bottom.

It can be caused by your baby’s skin being in contact with urine or faeces for a long time, their nappy rubbing against their skin, not cleaning the nappy area or not changing the nappy often enough.

Certain soaps, detergents, bubble baths or alcohol-based baby wipes can also cause nappy rash.

What toiletries should I put in my hospital bag?

It’s important to bear in mind why you’re going into hospital and what condition you’ll be in afterwards - for example, do you think you’d be able to shower?

If this is the case, bring things that you can use to freshen up easily, such as wet wipes, dry shampoo, deodorant, perfume, aftershave or scented body spray.

If you can shower, consider bringing your shampoo, conditioner (grab a combined one to save space), face and body wash, and toothpaste.

Your skin and lips may become drier than usual, so be sure to bring moisturisers and lip balm.

If you’re in hospital, odds are you probably won’t be feeling yourself - but if bringing your hair styling products or makeup along will help you feel back to normal, go for it!
