Periactin 4mg Antihistamine Tablets - 30 Tablets are a medication designed to provide you with relief from the symptoms associated with allergic reactions. They help with symptoms such as a runny or blocked nose, sneezing, itching and watery eyes.

The tablets can also be used for:

 

  • Itchiness associated with chickenpox 
  • Conjunctivitis 
  • Migraines and other similar headaches 

 

This medication is a drowsy antihistamine. 

 

How Periactin 4mg Antihistamine Tablets - 30 Tablets work

Periactin 4mg Antihistamine Tablets - 30 Tablets contain the active ingredient cyproheptadine hydrochloride. 

Cyproheptadine Hydrochloride works by stopping the unwanted effects of histamine and serotonin. 

 

Directions

Always take Periactin 4mg Antihistamine Tablets exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / Chemist4U pharmacist has told you. 

Children aged 2-6 years old: Half a tablet should be given 2-3 times a day. If an extra dose is required this should be given at bedtime. Do not give your child more than 3 tablets a day.

Children aged 7-14 years old: 1 tablet should be given 2-3 times a day. If an extra dose is required this should be given at bedtime. Do not give your child more than 4 tablets a day. 

Adults and children over 14 years old: Start with 1 tablet 3 times a day. Most people usually require 3-4 tablets a day. Do not take more than 8 tablets a day.

For migraines: Take 1 tablet when you feel the migraine start. If needed you can take another one after 30 minutes. You can then take 1 tablet every 4-6 hours to maintain relief. 

 

Side effects

Like all medicines, Periactin 4mg Antihistamine Tablets may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. Common side effects include: 

 

  • Insomnia 
  • Sleepiness 
  • Irritability 
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling faint 
  • Nausea 
  • Vomiting 
  • Diarrhoea 
  • Fatigue 
  • Weight gain

Serious side effects

Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness.

Warnings

Periactin 4mg Antihistamine Tablets may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not take these tablets if you are allergic to any of the ingredients or if:

 

  • You have a narrowing of the opening of the stomach 
  • You have glaucoma 
  • You are being treated for an asthmatic attack 
  • You are elderly and not very mobile 
  • You have problems passing urine 
  • You have a stomach ulcer

 

Talk to your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist before taking this medicine if: 

 

  • You have ever been told that you have high pressure inside your eye (high intraocular pressure)
  • You have an overactive thyroid 
  • You have high blood pressure
  • You have heart problems 
  • You have asthma 



Using/taking other medicines

If you are taking or have recently taken any medication, including medication obtained without a prescription, talk to your GP or pharmacist before taking this medication. 

Do not take this medication if you are currently taking MAO inhibitors e.g. moclobemide, phenelzine, tranylcypromine, linezolid or pargyline. 

You must speak to your GP if you are taking:

 

  • Sleeping pills e.g. temazepam, nitrazepam, zopiclone
  • Anxiety medicines e.g. diazepam, alprazolam, chlordiazepoxide
  • Antidepressants e.g. fluoxetine, paroxetine, imipramine 
  • Medications that make you sleepy e.g. sedatives or tranquillisers

 

Age restrictions 

This medication is not suitable for children under 2 years old.

 

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

This medication should not be taken during pregnancy.  If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, you must ask your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist for advice before taking any new medicine. 

 

Alcohol

Do not drink alcohol whilst you are taking this medication.

 

Driving and operating machinery 

Do not drive or operate machinery if you are taking this medication as it may make you sleepy.

 

Storage information

Store in a cool, dry place out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date, referring to the last day of the month stated on the packaging. Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste.
