What are Movicol Constipation Relief Chocolate Powder Sachets?

These Movicol Sachets are a treatment that works to relieve the effects of constipation. These sachets each contain 4 active ingredients that help to treat the condition. The active ingredients are:

  • Potassium chloride
  • Sodium chloride
  • Sodium hydrogen carbonate
  • Macrogol 3350

Three of the active ingredients replace salts and ions that are lost as a result of constipation and macrogol 3350 helps the bowel movements to return to normal.

What causes constipation?

Constipation can be caused by a number of different reason, and the cause is not always obvious. Potential causes of constipation include:

  • A lack of fibre in the diet
  • A poor diet
  • Not exercising enough
  • Ignoring the urge to go to the toilet
  • Stress or anxiety
  • As a result of certain types of medication

Some medical conditions can also cause constipation.

Who are these sachets suitable?

These Movicol Sachets are suitable to be used by adults and children aged 12 and over. They should not be used by anyone who is allergic to the ingredients contained in the sachets. They should also not be used if any of the following apply to you:

  • A blockage in the gut
  • A perforated gut wall
  • Suffer from inflammatory bowel conditions such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, or toxic megacolon

If you are using any medication for another condition, speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using.

Can someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding use these sachets?

These sachets can be used by someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding, though it is recommended that you speak to a medical professional before using.

How should Movicol Constipation Relief Chocolate Powder Sachets be used?

Open a sachet and pour the contents of the sachet into a glass. Add 125ml of water to the glass and stir until it is fully dissolved. Use these sachets whenever needed for up to 2 weeks. For a more serious condition, such as faecal impaction, only use for 3 days.

Are there any side effects?

Like with many medicines, there is a chance of side effects. Side effects that could occur include:

  • Indigestion
  • Passing wind
  • Bloating
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

If you notice a side effect, stop using and speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist as soon as possible. You can also record a side effect using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
