What are Pepto-Bismol Chewable Peppermint Tablets?

Pepto-Bismol Chewable Peppermint Tablets are an effective treatment for an upset stomach, providing fast relief of nausea, indigestion and heartburn. These Pepto-Bismol tablets also control diarrhoea. The active ingredient in these peppermint flavoured chewable tablets is bismuth subsalicylate.

What is the recommended dosage?

For adults and children 16 years and over, chew 2 tablets and repeat every half an hour to an hour if needed. No more than 16 tablets should be taken in 24 hours. Pepto-Bismol tablets can be taken before or after meals, on either an empty or full stomach. Do not take with aspirin or other salicylates. Pepto-Bismol should not be used if your symptoms are severe or they persist longer than 2 days - in this case, you should stop taking this medicine and see your doctor.

Why do I have an upset stomach?

If you’ve got an upset stomach, you may be experiencing a number of different symptoms including nausea (feeling sick), diarrhoea, indigestion and heartburn. Causes can vary depending on your symptoms or circumstances, but may include:

  • A stomach bug

  • Food poisoning

  • Overeating

  • Stress

  • IBS (irritable bowel syndrome)

  • GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)

How does bismuth subsalicylate treat an upset stomach?

These Pepto-Bismol tablets contain 262.5mg of the active ingredient bismuth subsalicylate. This works by protecting your stomach and oesophagus from stomach acid, as well as acting as a mild antacid to reduce excess acid and ease any discomfort.

Are Pepto-Bismol tablets suitable for pregnant women?

You should not take Pepto-Bismol tablets if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding and in need of relief for your upset stomach, talk to a Chemist4U pharmacist for advice or browse our full range of possible alternative treatments for digestion & stomach issues

Are Pepto-Bismol tablets suitable for children?

Children under 16 should not take Pepto-Bismol tablets due to a potential link between salicylates and Reye’s syndrome, a very rare but very serious disease. If your child is suffering with an upset stomach, contact a Chemist4U pharmacist for advice on suitable treatments.

When should these tablets not be used?

Most adults and adolescents over 16 should usually be safe to take Pepto-Bismol tablets. However, you should not take this medicine if you are:

  • Allergic to aspirin or other salicylates

  • Allergic to any of the ingredients

Speak to your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist before taking Pepto-Bismol tablets if you have:

  • A blood clotting disorder

  • Gout

  • Diabetes

If you are taking any prescribed medicines, particularly blood thinners or salicylates, you must speak to your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist before taking Pepto-Bismol tablets.

Are there any side effects?

The most common side effect related to Pepto-Bismol tablets is the blackening of your stools and/or your tongue. This happens when the bismuth in this medicine comes into contact with small amounts of sulphur in your digestive system or saliva. This combination creates bismuth sulphide, a black substance. This side effect may be alarming, but it’s really common and should go away once you stop taking the Pepto-Bismol tablets.

If you experience any other unexpected side effects, you can report them using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.

Why do I need to answer questions to buy this product?

You do not need a prescription for Pepto-Bismol tablets, however, you will be asked to complete a short medical questionnaire by your Chemist4U pharmacist before we can take your order. This includes some simple questions that all pharmacies legally are required to ask before supplying this kind of product. This helps our pharmacy team to be sure that Pepto-Bismol tablets are the best choice for you.
