What are Senna Tablets?

Senna Tablets are a remedy for constipation which uses natural herbal ingredients to provide much-needed relief. Ideal for those who are suffering from constipation and would rather use a herbal remedy. This product contains 60 x 7.5mg Senna Tablets.

What causes constipation?

Short term constipation could have several causes. One of the simplest and more common causes is not getting enough fibre in your diet. Other key causes of constipation can include not drinking enough fluids, immobility, or lack of exercise. If you’ve gone through a recent change in your lifestyle or routine, you could become constipated as a result.

How do Senna Tablets treat constipation?

Senna Tablets uses the active ingredient, senna pods, as a herbal remedy for constipation. Senna pods work by making your bowel muscles contract more often and with more force, helping to move the contents of the bowel and making it easier to go to the toilet.

How to take this product.

When treating adults who need relief from constipation, take two 7.5mg Senna Tablets at bedtime. Do this whenever required, but do not use this product for more than 1 – 2 weeks without medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist if you have not had a bowel movement after 3 days and have been taking these laxative tablets.

You do not need a prescription for Senna Tablets, however, you will be asked to complete a short medical questionnaire by your Chemist 4 U pharmacist before we can take your order. This includes some simple questions that all pharmacies legally are required to ask before supplying this kind of product. This helps our pharmacy team to be sure that this product is the best choice for you.

When should Senna Tablets not be used?

Senna Tablets are not suitable for those under the age of 12. Do not take Senna Tablets if you are allergic to senna pods or any of the listed ingredients. Do not use this product if:

• You have a blockage or narrowing of the gastro-intestinal tract or bowel.
• You have paralysis or a lack or muscle tone in the bowel.
• You have appendicitis.
• You have an inflammatory bowel disease (e.g. Crohn’s disease).
• You have severe dehydration.
• You have persistent or undiagnosed abdominal complaints, such as pain or nausea.
• You have faecal impaction or rectal bleeding for which you don’t know the cause.
• You have already taken a laxative but are still constipated.
• You have had a sudden change in bowel habit which has lasted for more than 2 weeks.
• You have kidney or heart failure.

What side effects could this medication have?

Like all medications, Senna Tablets can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. These side effects include:

• Abdominal pain, spasms, and diarrhoea.
• Red blood cells in your urine.
• Pigmentation of the gastrointestinal tract.
• Yellow or red-brown discolouration of the urine.
• Allergic reactions, e.g. skin rash, hives, itchiness around the anus.

If you experience these or any other side effect while using this product, speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist immediately.
