How Duphalac Laxative Syrup (Lactulose) works
Duphalac Laxative Syrup (Lactulose) contains the active ingredient lactulose. Lactulose is a colonic acidifier that works by increasing stool water content and softening the stool.
Directions
Always take Duphalac Laxative Syrup (Lactulose) exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / Chemist4U pharmacist has told you.
Infants under 1 years old:
5ml of the syrup should be given daily.
Children aged 1-6 years old:
5-10ml of the syrup should be given daily.
Children aged 7-14 years old:
A starting dose of 15ml should be given daily. The maintenance dose of this treatment should be 10-15ml.
Children over 14 years old and adults:
A starting dose of 15-45ml should be taken daily. The maintenance dose of this treatment is 15-30ml.
Side effects
Like all medicines, Duphalac Laxative Syrup (Lactulose) may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. Common side effects include:
- Diarrhoea
- Flatulence
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal pain
If you experience any side effects, including any not included in the patient information leaflet, you can report them using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
Serious side effects
Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness.
Warnings
Duphalac Laxative Syrup (Lactulose) may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not take this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients or if you suffer from:
- Galactosemia
- A blockage in your gastrointestinal tract
- Gastrointestinal perforation
- Galactose or fructose intolerance
- Total lactase deficiency
- Glucose-galactose malabsorption
You must talk to your GP or pharmacist before taking this product if:
- You suffer from unexplained stomach ache
- You are unable to digest milk sugar
- You have diabetes
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
This product can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, you must ask your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist for advice before taking any new medicine.
Storage information
Store in a cool, dry place out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date, referring to the last day of the month stated on the packaging. Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste.
