What are Tyrozets Dual Action Sore Throat Relief 24 Lozenges?

Tyrozets lozenges are a form of treatment for minor throat and mouth irritations. They can be taken after mouth or throat surgery to ease pain and irritation as you heal. They work as dual-action lozenges, tackling throat pain and fighting infection all in one.

Are Tyrozets being discontinued?

Tyrozets are being discontinued following a challenge from the MHRA about whether the use of an antibiotic in throat lozenges is clinically relevant. The stock we're currently selling will be the last we get in and each pack has an expiry date of June 2022.

Who are Tyrozets Lozenges suitable for?

Tyrozets are suitable for adults and children aged 3 and over who are suffering from mild pain or irritation in their mouth or throat. These aniseed-flavoured lozenges dissolve in the mouth, making them perfect for those who struggle to swallow whole tablets or capsules.

Why do I have a sore throat?

Sore throats are very common and usually aren’t anything to worry about. They’re often caused by viruses, such as a cold or the flu, or can be caused by bacteria. When you have a sore throat, you may experience the following symptoms:

  • Pain, especially when swallowing
  • A dry, scratchy feeling in the throat
  • Redness in the back of your mouth
  • Bad breath
  • Cough
  • Swollen glands in the neck

How will Tyrozets lozenges ease irritation in my mouth and throat?

Tyrozets contain two active ingredients which work together to create its unique dual-action formula. The first active ingredient in each lozenge is 1mg of tyrothricin, an antibiotic which helps to fight infections that can irritate the mouth and throat. The second ingredient is 5mg of benzocaine, which is a local anaesthetic. This numbs your mouth and throat, easing pain and discomfort until your soreness or irritation has cleared.

Can I eat or drink after taking these throat lozenges?

Tyrozets contain an anaesthetic, which means that your mouth and throat may become numb after you take a lozenge. For this reason, you should wait until the worst of the numbness has worn off before eating or drinking. This will help to avoid further irritation to the lining of your mouth and throat.

Can I drink alcohol while I’m taking Tyrozets?

We would recommend that you avoid drinking alcohol while you’re taking Tyrozets or other medications. Alcohol can increase the chances of side effects in many different medications, especially effects like drowsiness, making them worse than they would usually be otherwise.

Can someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding take these lozenges?

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, then you should consult your doctor or Chemist 4 U before using Tyrozets. Some medications may not be safe for you or your baby at this time, and a medical professional may recommend a different treatment which will be better suited to both of you.

Can I take this sore throat treatment if I’m taking other medication?

Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using this product if you are taking any other medication, including those you obtained without a prescription. Some medicines can interact when used together, causing side effects or making your medication less effective.

Can I take Tyrozets and Strepsils at the same time?

Tyrozets and Strepsils use different active ingredients to ease your throat pain, so you may be able to use them at the same time. However, you should ask your doctor or pharmacist before doing this to make sure that this combination is safe and suitable for you.

How to take these lozenges

Take one Tyrozets lozenge at a time and allow it to dissolve slowly in the mouth, do not swallow it whole. If your symptoms have not improved after 2 days, speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist. Do not take for more than 5 consecutive days.

  • For children aged 3-11, take one lozenge every 3 hours. Do not take more than 6 lozenges in 24 hours
  • For adults and children over 12, take one lozenge every 3 hours the same. Do not take more than 8 lozenges in 24 hours

Why do I need to answer medical questions before I buy this product?

You do not need a prescription for Tyrozets, however, you will be asked to complete a short medical questionnaire by your Chemist 4 U pharmacist before we can take your order. This includes some simple questions that all pharmacies legally are required to ask before supplying this kind of product. This helps our pharmacy team to be sure that this product is the best choice for you.

When should this product not be used?

Tyrozets are not suitable for use by children under the age of 3. Do not use this product if you are allergic to tyrothricin, benzocaine, or any of the other listed ingredients. Using an antibiotic can allow the development of different infections to the one you are treating, if you think you are developing a different infection, stop using this product and speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away.

Do Tyrozets have any side effects?

Like all medication, Tyrozets can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. If you experience the following side effects, stop use and seek immediate medical help:

  • Abnormal blood pigment levels (Methaemoglobinaemia), which can cause symptoms such as pale, grey, or blue-tinged skin, lips, or nail beds, headaches, shortness of breath, increased heart-beat, dizziness, confusion, tiredness, lack of energy.

Other side effects include:

  • Skin rashes
  • Blackness or soreness of the tongue, which disappears when you stop taking the lozenges

If you experience these or any other side effects while using this product, stop use and speak to your doctor or pharmacist. For more information about reporting the side effects of medication, please see the MHRA’s Yellow Card Scheme.

If there were 10 stars I would give Tyrozets 11. I have used these for decades - they are the ONLY product that numbs my throat when I get a rasping sore throat and when I have difficulty swallowing. I tuck a lozenge into my cheek, and let it slowly seep down my throat, which it subtly numbs. Absolutely marvelous. Boots now won't stock Tyrozets because of the antibiotic content, so I hope that someone comes up with a product with the benxocaine anaesthetic. The only other source I could find was for fish tanks, which is hardly appropriate for my sore throat!!

Sometimes when you take painkillers you find that although they make your headache, backache, or whatever your aches and pains you’re trying to treat a bit better, they don’t quite do the job.

This is when you might consider picking up another painkiller to try to kick that pain to the curb. But how do you know if this is safe? Can you take more than one painkiller at once?

If you’ve ever looked into your medicine cabinet and asked yourself one of these questions then you’ve come to the right place.
