Actifed Multi-Action Dry Coughs is a medicine that is designed to relieve the symptoms of a dry cough. 

It is also used to help with the symptoms of colds and flu.

 

How Actifed Multi-Action Dry Coughs works

Actifed Multi-Action Dry Coughs contains three active ingredients: triprolidine hydrochloride, pseudoephedrine hydrochloride and dextromethorphan hydrobromide. 

Triprolidine hydrochloride is an antihistamine that helps to stop sneezing, runny noses and watery eyes. 

Pseudoephedrine hydrochloride is a decongestant that unblocks stuffy noses. 

Dextromethorphan hydrobromide is used to help relieve coughs.

 

Directions

Always take Actifed Multi-Action Dry Coughs exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / Chemist4U pharmacist has told you. 

Shake the bottle before use. 

Take 2 x 5ml spoonfuls every 4-6 hours. Do not take more than 4 doses in 24 hours. 

 

Side effects

Like all medicines, Actifed Multi-Action Dry Coughs may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. Common side effects include: 

 

  • Headaches 
  • Difficulty sleeping 
  • Dizziness or drowsiness
  • Nervousness 
  • Difficulty performing tasks 

 

If you experience any side effects, including any not included in the patient information leaflet, you can report them using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.

 

Serious side effects

Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness. 

 

Warnings

Actifed Multi-Action Dry Coughs may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not use this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients or if:

 

  • You have lung disease 
  • You have diabetes 
  • You have pheochromocytoma 
  • You have an overactive thyroid gland
  • You have glaucoma 
  • You have severe kidney problems 
  • You have high blood pressure or heart disease 

 

Talk to your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist before taking this medicine if: 

 

  • You have kidney or liver problems 
  • You are susceptible to glaucoma 
  • You have blocked arteries or veins 
  • You have bronchitis, emphysema or asthma 
  • You have had a cough for a few weeks or a cough with a lot of mucus 
  • You are being treated for a thyroid disorder 
  • You have difficulty passing water or prostate problems 
  • You are or have ever been addicted to opioids, alcohol, prescription medicines or illegal drugs 
  • You have previously suffered with withdrawal symptoms when you have stopped taking alcohol or drugs 
  • You have been told that you are a slow metabolizer of CYP2D6



Using/taking other medicines

If you are taking or have recently taken any medication, including medication obtained without a prescription, then you should talk to your GP or pharmacist before taking this medicine. 

You must tell your GP or pharmacist if you are taking the following medication:

 

  • Sedatives (to treat anxiety and tension)
  • Hypnotics (sleeping tablets including barbiturates) 
  • Certain drugs for depression such as norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitors (NDRIs)
  • Tricyclic antidepressants (used to treat mood disorders)
  • Sympathomimetic drugs (stimulants or appetite suppressants or medication used to treat congestion or asthma
  • Anticholinergic drugs (drugs used to treat cramps or spasms e.g. atropine)
  • Antihypertensives (drugs used to treat high blood pressure e.g. guanethidine, methyldopa, adrenergic neurone blockers)
  • Moclobemide (used to treat mood disorders)
  • Cardiac glycosides (drugs used to control heart rhythms or contractions e.g. digoxin)
  • Ergot alkaloids (drugs used to treat migraines e.g. 
  • Oxytocin (used to help contractions during childbirth
  • Antipsychotics (drugs used to treat mood disorders e.g. haloperidol, thioridazine, perphenazine)
  • Antiarrhythmic agents (drugs used to treat an irregular heartbeat e.g. amiodarone, propafenone, quinidine)
  • Antifungals (terbinafine)
  • Antihistamines (drugs used to treat allergic reactions)

 

Age restrictions 

This product is not suitable for children under 12 years old.

 

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, you must ask your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist for advice before taking any new medicine. 

 

Alcohol

Avoid alcoholic drinks when you are taking Actifed Multi-Action Dry Coughs.

 

Driving and operating machinery 

This product may make you feel drowsy. Do not drive or operate machinery until you feel safe to do so.

 

Storage information

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date, referring to the last day of the month stated on the packaging. Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste.
