What are Dulcolax Suppositories?

If you’re struggling with constipation or maybe you’re required to empty the contents of your bowel before a treatment or procedure, Dulcolax Suppositories can help. A suppository is a small, cone-shaped object that’s inserted into your back passage to encourage a bowel movement. Containing the laxative bisacodyl to help stimulate the bowel muscles, you can achieve relief in as little as 10-30 minutes.

How to use this product

Always use Dulcolax Suppositories exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / Chemist4U pharmacist has told you. Do not use this product everyday for more than 5 days. To use, start by removing the foil wrapping. Position yourself lying down on one side and pull your knees up towards your chest. You’ll want to keep one leg drawn up more than the other.

Using your index or middle finger, gently push the suppository as far as possible into your back passage, pointed end first. Once it’s in place, push it side-ways to ensure it's touching the wall of the bowel. Lower your legs into a comfortable position, making sure that the suppository is still in place. You’ll want to keep it inside of you for at least 30 minutes. If you’re struggling to fit the suppository, refer to the patient information leaflet provided.

How does bisacodyl relieve constipation?

The active ingredient in Dulcolax Suppositories is bisacodyl, a stimulant laxative that’s used to relieve constipation. It works by softening your stool and giving your bowel a shift to release a bowel movement.

What is constipation?

Constipation isn’t just about not being able to go to the toilet - rather, it describes a collection of symptoms that include hard, pellet-like stools; excessive straining, a sensation that you are unable to go, and a decrease in bowel movements.

The source of constipation varies, but it could be caused by medication, lack of fibre, dehydration, stress, exercise, hormones, or ignoring the urge to go to the toilet. However, it’s important to remember that constipation is subjective to the individual, and it’s very normal to not have a daily bowel movement.

Are Dulcolax Suppositories suitable for children?

Dulcolax Suppositories are suitable for children aged 10 years and over. If you’re looking for constipation treatment for a child under the age of 10, you should speak to your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist for advice on alternative treatment options.

Are Dulcolax Suppositories suitable for pregnant and breastfeeding women?

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, you must ask your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist for advice before using Dulcolax Suppositories.

Will Dulcolax Suppositories cause drowsiness?

Some people may experience drowsiness, dizziness or feel faint while using this product. If any of these symptoms occur, wait until they pass before driving or operating machinery.

When should this product not be used?

Dulcolax Suppositories may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not use this product if you are allergic to bisacodyl, hard fat or any of the other listed ingredients. Do not use if you:

  • Have severe dehydration

  • Have a bowel condition called “ileus” (blockage in the intestine)

  • Have a serious abdominal condition such as appendicitis

  • Have severe abdominal pain with nausea and vomiting

  • Have a blocked bowel (intestinal obstruction)

  • Have inflammation of the bowel (small or large intestine)

  • Have cracking of the skin around your back passage (anal fissures)

  • Have inflammation or ulcers around your back passage (ulcerative proctitis)

Talk to your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist before taking this medicine if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines. This is because Dulcolax Suppositories can affect the way some other medicines and the way Dulcolax Suppositories work.

Are there any side effects?

Like all products, Dulcolax Suppositories may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness. Common side effects include:

  • Abdominal cramps or pain

  • Diarrhoea

  • Nausea

For more information on potential side effects, refer to the patient information leaflet. If you experience any side effects, including any not included in the patient information leaflet, you can report them using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
