What is Optrex Bacterial Conjunctivitis Chloramphenicol 1% Ointment?

Optrex Bacterial Conjunctivitis Eye Ointment helps to treat bacterial infections that affect the outer surface of the eye. It contains an effective antibiotic called Chloramphenicol which clears up the infection and provides relief from irritation and discomfort caused by bacterial conjunctivitis. The ointment is a topical treatment that is simple to apply and is suitable for adults and children over the age of 2. What is Bacterial Conjunctivitis?

Bacterial Conjunctivitis (also known as red eye) is a common eye condition that causes the thin layer of tissue that covers the front of the eye to become, red, inflamed and sore. If you have Bacterial Conjunctivitis you may experience:

  • Eye redness 
  • Discharge 
  • Watery eyes
  • Burning or gritty sensation in the eyes
  • Sticky coating on eyelashes


Bacterial conjunctivitis is caused by an infectious bacterial infection. It usually isn’t a cause for concern and it will clean up within a couple of weeks. Try not to wear contacts when suffering with conjunctivitis and you can cleanse your lashes of sticky or crusty residue with cotton wool and water. 


How can Optrex Conjunctivitis help to soothe symptoms of eye infections?

Optrex Conjunctivitis contains an active ingredient called Chloramphenicol which treats bacterial infections that affect the outer surface of the eye. The ointment is a topical treatment and is easy to apply. The effective formula both treats the infection and provides relief from irritation and discomfort caused by bacterial conjunctivitis. Optrex Bacterial Conjunctivitis is suitable for adults and children over the age of 2.


How to use this product?

Ensure that your hands have been washed and dried thoroughly before use and check the tube seal is not broken before first use. Remove the cap and take special care that the nozzle of the tube does not touch your eye, the skin around your eye or your fingers. Use a mirror to help you clearly see where you are placing the ointment. Place the nozzle of the tube close to your eye  and gently pull the lower eyelid downwards and look up. Squeeze the tube gently and apply about 1 cm of the ointment to the space between the lower eyelid and the eye. Close the eye for a moment. Repeat in the other eye if needed. Replace the cap securely after use. 


Dose

The dose is around 1cm to be applied to the affected eyes. If you’re using drops during the day, apply the ointment at night before going to bed. The course of treatment is 5 days. Do NOT discontinue use before the end of the 5 days, even if you feel better. 


Warnings

Do not breathe on or touch the nozzle of the tube. Avoid touching the eyes or eyelids with the nozzle of the tube. Only use this product yourself, do NOT share with other people. Do NOT use this product without consulting your doctor first. If you symptoms do not improve after 5 days, seek advice from your doctor. 


When NOT to use Optrex Bacterial Conjunctivitis

Do NOT use this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients (see ingredients tab for full list) or if you:

  • Have ever had problems with your blood during previous treatments with chloramphenicol
  • Have a family history of blood problems, such as low white blood cell, red blood cell or platelet count


If you have experienced any of the following, do NOT use this product and seek advice from your doctor or a Chemist4U pharmacist:

  • Your eyesight is affected
  • You have pain within the eye
  • Your eye has suffered a blow or other injury
  • Your eye is inflamed and you have a rash on the scalp or face
  • The pupil of your eye looks unusual or your eye looks cloudy
  • Your eye has suffered a blow or other injury
  • Your eye is inflamed and you have a rash on the scalp or face
  • The pupil of your eye looks unusual or your eye looks cloudy
  • Your eyes are sensitive to light
  • You have a foreign body in your eye, which has not been removed
  • You have recently had an eye infection
  • You suffer from or have ever suffered from glaucoma or dry eye syndrome
  • You wear contact lenses
  • You have had eye surgery or laser treatment in the last 6 months

Can Optrex cause side effects?

Like all medicines, Optrex Conjunctivitis can cause side effects, although not everybody will experience them. If you experience any of the following symptoms discontinue use and seek medical advice immediately:

  • Itching or rashes
  • Swelling 
  • Breathing problems
  • Changes in blood leading to tiredness or easy 


You may experience blurred vision or a mild burning or stinging sensation may be experienced when you first apply the ointment. This is not serious and should subside quickly.
