What is a Pharmacy medicine?

A pharmacy medicine, also known as a P-medicine is a medicine that can only be bought from a pharmacy. Pharmacy medicines can be intended for short-term or long-term use, and for the treatment of health conditions such as pain, acne or hay fever. They are sometimes stronger and come in bigger pack sizes than GSL medicines that you can buy in most supermarkets, so you will need to answer a few short questions for your safety.

FAQ's

Can I get hay fever tablets over the counter?

Different hayfever tablets contain different active ingredients. Remedies containing Chlorphenamine (Piriton), Promethazine (Phenergan) or Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) can be sold over the counter when their sale is reviewed by a pharmacist which is why we ask customers a few questions before they are able to purchase them. Over the counter hayfever tablets are not inherently "stronger" than those available on general sale. Tablets containing low doses of Cetirizine and Loratadine can be bought without pharmaceutical review and you may find that these are more effective for your particular symptoms. How do I know if toiletries are travel size?

Toiletries will be travel size if they are in a container holding 100ml (3.4 ounces) or less.

You can buy ready-made travel-sized toiletries for most brands, so you don’t need to worry about them being rejected at the airport.

Or, you can buy empty travel-sized containers and fill them with your favourite products.

What is the best diarrhoea treatment?

If you want a diarrhoea treatment that works quickly, try an over-the-counter product like loperamide (Imodium) or Pepto-Bismol.

Antibiotics may be given if it’s caused by a bacteria or parasite which you may have gotten from consuming food or water that’s been contaminated.

Diarrhoea that’s caused by a viral infection cannot be treated with antibiotics - you may want to try treatments at home, like eating bland foods, taking probiotics and drinking rice water.

What causes travel sickness?

Motion or travel sickness occurs when the nervous system receives confusing messages from your senses, like your ear, skin pressure, muscle and joint receptors.

An example of motion sickness is when someone is on a boat or car and their ears sense movement up and down, left and right, but their eyes see a static view, as though they were not moving at all.
