What is Calpol Calgel Teething Gel 10g?

Calpol Galgel Teething Gel is a painkiller that can be used to ease teething pain in your little one. It works as an anaesthetic, relieving pain and irritation so your baby can feel more comfortable as they cut their first teeth.

Who is Calgel suitable for?

Calgel is perfect for infants who are older than 5 months and are suffering with teething pain. If other methods, such as teething rings or massaging the gums aren’t working, this gel can help to ease your baby’s pain so they can feel more at ease during the teething process.

What happens when my child is teething?

When your child is teething, their new teeth push up through their gums and into the mouth. This process usually starts when your baby is around 6 months old and can cause them pain and discomfort. Some of the most common symptoms you may notice when your child is teething include:

  • Your child wants to bite or gnaw on things a lot
  • Your baby is fussy or irritable
  • Sore, red gums where the tooth is coming through
  • One cheek is flushed
  • Your baby is dribbling more than they usually do

How will this gel help to ease my child’s teething pain?

Calgel Teething Gel contains the active ingredient lidocaine, which works to numb the area where you have applied it. This helps to ease teething pain by numbing the gum. Meanwhile, the Cetylpyridium chloride in this product works as an antiseptic, killing bacteria and helping to prevent infection during the teething process.

Can this gel be used by adults?

Adults can use this gel if they are suffering with pains in their mouth or on the gums. However, if you are an adult who intends to use this product, please be aware that it should not be used if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Can it be used with other types of medication?

There is currently no evidence to suggest that Calgel interacts with other medications, so you can use this product if your child is taking other medicines. However, you should not use this product if your child is using other medications which contain lidocaine, as you could end up using too much of this ingredient, causing unwanted effects.

How do I use this teething gel?

Before using this product, wash your hands thoroughly. Apply a pea sized bob of gel to a clean fingertip and apply directly to the sore area of the gum. Spread the gel gently and evenly over the area you wish to treat. Repeat the dose after 3 hours if necessary, but do not use more than 6 times in any 24-hour period. If your child vomits, spits out, or swallows the medicine, do not apply another dose straight away. Instead, apply the next dose in 3 hours, as you usually would.

When should Calgel not be used?

Calgel is not suitable for use by children under the age of 5 months. Do not use this product if you or your child are allergic to chamomile or any of the other listed ingredients in this product. Do not use this gel at the same time as other products which contain lidocaine. Speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using this product if you have been told that your child has an intolerance to some sugars, as this gel contains sorbitol. For topical use only.

Are there any side effects?

Like all medications, Calgel can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. These include:

  • Swelling of the mouth, gums, or tongue
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Rash
  • Inflammation of the skin
  • Reddening of the skin

If you experience these or any other side effects while using this product, stop use and speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist. For more information about reporting the side effects of medication, please see the MHRA’s Yellow Card scheme.
