What is Normacol Plus?

Normacol Plus is a constipation treatment that uses natural active ingredients to help you to go to the toilet. If you’re constipated and need a way to make passing solids easier or more comfortable, this product could be the perfect choice for you. Simply place the granules onto your tongue and swallow with plenty of water for a simple constipation remedy.

Why am I constipated?

There are lots of reasons why you may be constipated, as it’s a very common condition that lots of people experience at one point or another. One of the most common causes of constipation is your diet, especially if you’re not getting enough fibre or aren’t drinking enough fluids. It can also happen if you’re not very active or spend a lot of time sitting or lying down. You could also become constipated as a side effect of some medications or if you’re feeling stressed, anxious, or depressed.

How will the natural ingredients in Normacol Plus relieve my constipation?

Normacol Plus contains two natural active ingredients which work together to relieve your constipation, sterculia and frangula bark. Sterculia comes from the karaya tree and works as a bulk-forming laxative, meaning that it makes your poo larger and softer so it’s easier and more comfortable for you to pass. Frangula bark is a herbal remedy from the alder buckhorn plant which is traditionally used to ease constipation.

Should I use Normacol Plus granules or sachets?

Normacol Plus is available in both bags of granules and pre-measured sachets, so you can choose which type you like better. The sachets can just be poured directly onto your tongue without having to stop and measure out the right dose when you’re on the go. On the other hand, the bagged granules are easy to measure out onto a teaspoon so you can take them at home. Depending on when and where you’re planning on taking each dose, you may find it easier to use the sachets or the bagged granules, so choose whichever one suits you best.

Can I take these laxatives if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Normacol Plus. Constipation is a common problem during pregnancy and a medical professional can help you to manage it in a way that is safe for both you and your baby.

Can I take this product if I’m taking other medication?

If you’re taking any other medication, including those obtained without a prescription, you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Normacol Plus. Some medications may not be effective when used together, but your doctor or pharmacist can help you to choose the right treatments for you.

Will Normacol Plus make me lose weight?

Normacol Plus is a laxative and should not be used as a weight-loss aid. Trying to use laxatives for weight loss can be extremely dangerous as well as ineffective, and it is not recommended by medical professionals. If you’re concerned about your weight, we recommend speaking to your GP, practice nurse, or pharmacist and asking for their advice about losing or gaining weight in a safe and healthy way.

How to take this laxative

To take Normacol Plus, open the sachet and deposit the granules onto your tongue. Swallow them right away with plenty of water or another cool drink. Alternatively, you can sprinkle the granules onto a soft food, such as yoghurt, and eat them. Adults should take 1 - 2 sachets once or twice a day, after meals. Children aged 6 - 12 should only take this product if recommended to do so by a doctor, and you should follow their dosage instructions carefully. Do not take this product while lying down or just before bed, as this can increase the chances of the granules blocking your food pipe.

When should this product not be used?

Normacol Plus is not suitable for use in children under the age of 6. Do not use this product if you are allergic to sterculia, frangula bark, or any of the other listed ingredients. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you have ulcerative colitis. Do not take this product if you have:

  • A blockage in your intestine or gut
  • Total loss of muscle tone in your colon
  • Faecal impaction

Does Normacol Plus have any side effects?

Like all medications, Normacol Plus granules can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. These side effects include:

  • Blockage of the bowel, causing stomach pain
  • Swollen stomach
  • Flatulence (wind)
  • Blockage of the oesophagus (food pipe) if you do not take this product with enough fluid or take too much Normacol Plus
  • An allergic reaction, showing symptoms such as itchy skin, rash, difficulty breathing, swelling of the mouth, tongue, face, or throat
  • Diarrhoea
  • Feeling sick
  • Discolouration of your colon lining, also known as melanosis coli.
