What is Infacol?

Infacol is a treatment for babies with suspected colic, formulated to relieve wind and griping pain associated with the condition. This medicine contains the active ingredient simeticone, a type of medicine known as an antiflatulent that can treat the symptoms of bloating and pain caused by excess gas.

What is the recommended dose of Infacol?

Infacol is quick and easy to give to your baby, even if they’re crying. All you need to do is gently shake the bottle, draw up one dropper full by squeezing the bulb twice, then administer the dose by squeezing the bulb and releasing the medicine onto the back of your baby’s tongue.

The recommended dose of Infacol is one dropper full (0.5ml) which should be given before each feed. If your baby’s colic hasn’t improved after 3 or 4 days, you can double this dose to two droppers full (1ml). This may be most effective at night time before your baby’s evening feed.

Infacol is most effective when you use it consistently for several days and you can continue to use it for up to several weeks. If your baby’s symptoms don’t improve or they seem to be getting worse, contact your doctor for further advice.

How does simeticone relieve colic?

Whilst the exact cause of colic is unknown, it’s thought to possibly be caused by trapped wind. One dose of Infacol contains 40mg of simeticone, which works to relieve the pain and discomfort associated with trapped wind by joining together all of the little gas bubbles inside the stomach, creating bigger bubbles that your baby can easily bring up as wind.

What are the signs of colic in babies?

Colic refers to when a baby is crying a lot without an obvious cause. Your baby might have colic if they are crying for more than 3 hours a day, 3 days a week for at least 1 week. They may also cry more often during the afternoon or the evening. If your baby has colic, they might:

  • Clench their fists

  • Go red in the face

  • Bring their knees up to their tummy

  • Arch their back

  • Have a rumbling tummy

  • Have a lot of wind

Colic is a very common condition in babies and it should eventually go away on its own. In the meantime, colic relief treatments like Infacol may be able to help relieve your baby’s discomfort.

When should Infacol not be used?

You should not give Infacol to your baby if you think they might be allergic to simeticone or any of the other ingredients. As well as this, you should not give Infacol to your baby if they are being treated for a thyroid disorder, especially if they are taking levothyroxine, as Infacol could reduce the amount of medicine that is absorbed and weaken the effect of the treatment.

Are there any side effects?

Simeticone won’t be absorbed by your baby’s body, so it’s very unlikely that they will experience any side effects. If your baby does experience any unwanted side effects, speak to a doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist for expert advice. You can also report any side effects using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
