What is Children's Chloraseptic Blackcurrant Throat Spray?

This throat spray is a form of treatment that works to relieve a sore throat. It does this thanks to the active ingredient which is benzocaine. Benzocaine is a local anaesthetic that numbs the throat, reducing the pain.

What causes a sore throat?

A sore throat is often caused by a virus, such as a cold or the flu. The irritation in the throat can be caused by mucus or phlegm becoming trapped in the airways, making breathing more difficult. A sore throat can also be caused by tonsillitis, laryngitis, or a condition known as strep throat. This is caused by a bacterial infection in the throat.

Who is this Chloraseptic throat spray suitable for?

This spray is suitable to be used by children aged 6 and over as well as adults. It should not be used by anyone who is allergic to any of the ingredients contained in the spray. It should also not be used if you have difficulty breathing, swallowing, or have a rare blood condition known as methemoglobinemia.

Can someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding use this spray?

Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding should not use this spray. Instead, they should seek advice on what treatment to use.

How should Children's Chloraseptic Blackcurrant Throat Spray be used?

Remove the cap from the bottle and spin the nozzle around so it extends outwards of the bottle. Spray three times away from anyone if using for the first time. When using, hold your breath, open the mouth and spray into the back of the throat. For children aged 6-12, use under adult supervision and spray once into the throat. Repeat every 2-3 hours, up to 8 times a day. For adults and children under 12, pray three times instead of once. Do not use if unable to hold breath.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects are unlikely but they could occur as a result of an allergic reaction. If you notice any side effect, then stop using the spray and speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist as soon as possible. You can also record any side effect using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
