What are Calpol FastMelts?

Calpol FastMelts are melt in the mouth, strawberry flavoured tablets that help to relieve symptoms of pain and fever in children. Perfect for children over the age of six, these tablets are colour and sugar-free, making them the perfect way to combat headaches, fever, symptoms of a cold, and other ailments.

How will I know if my child has a cold?

Symptoms of colds are the same in adults and children, so if you’ve ever had a cold you’ll know what to look for if your little one is feeling under the weather. However, symptoms of colds can last for longer in children than in adults. Some of the most common symptoms of a cold include:

  • Headaches
  • A raised temperature or fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Blocked or runny nose
  • Coughs
  • Sneezes
  • Sore throat

How will this product help to relieve my child’s cold?

Calpol FastMelts contain the active ingredient paracetamol, which is a popular painkiller that many people take to manage everyday aches and pains. As well as being a very effective painkiller, paracetamol can also help to reduce fever and high temperatures, making this product perfect for children suffering from cold and flu.

Can adults use this medication?

Adults can take Calpol Fastmelts, but there are a few additional things you should keep in mind if you choose to take this product.

  • If you are taking the oral contraceptive pill then this product may be less effective at reducing pain or fever
  • If you drink large amounts of alcohol you should speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before taking this product, as it can make you more likely to experience side effects
  • You should speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before taking this medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding

Can I give this to my child if they are taking other medication?

You should speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using this product if you or your child are taking other medication. Some medications can interact when they are used together, causing unpleasant side effects or making your medication less effective. These medicines include:

  • Metoclopramide or domperidone, which are used for nausea and vomiting
  • Colestyramine, which is used to treat high cholesterol
  • Anticoagulants, which are also known as blood thinners, such as warfarin
  • Anticonvulsants, which are used to treat epilepsy

How to use Calpol FastMelts

For best results, gently suck Calpol Fastmelts until they dissolve on the tongue and then swallow. Do this up to 4 times a day, leaving at least 4 hours between each dose and never taking more than 4 dosages in 24 hours. Your dose will be:

  • Children aged 6 – 9: 1 tablet up to 4 times a day
  • Children aged 9 – 12: 2 tablets up to 4 times a day
  • Children aged 12 – 16: 2 – 3 tablets up to 4 times a day
  • Adults and children aged over 16: 2 – 4 tablets up to 4 times a day.

When should Calpol FastMelts not be used?

Calpol FastMelts are not suitable for use by children under the age of 6. Do not take this product if you or your child are allergic to paracetamol or any of the other listed ingredients. Do not give this product to your child if:

  • They are taking anything else with paracetamol in it
  • They have phenylketonuria (a hereditary disease discovered at birth)
  • They have serious kidney or liver problems

Does this product have side effects?

Like all medicines, Calpol FastMelts can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. These side effects include:

  • Allergic reactions, e.g. swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, difficulty swallowing, wheezing
  • Becoming unusually tired
  • Unexpected bruising or bleeding
  • Getting more infections (such as colds) than usual
  • Serious skin reactions e.g. skin reddening, blisters, rash

If you or your child experience these or any other side effects while using Calpol FastMelts, stop using this product and speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting the side effects of medication, please see the MHRA’s Yellow Card scheme.

Advice & Guides

Can I take two painkillers at once?

Sometimes when you take painkillers you find that although they make your headache, backache, or whatever your aches and pains you’re trying to treat a bit better, they don’t quite do the job.

This is when you might consider picking up another painkiller to try to kick that pain to the curb. But how do you know if this is safe? Can you take more than one painkiller at once?

If you’ve ever looked into your medicine cabinet and asked yourself one of these questions then you’ve come to the right place.
