What causes a dry, tickly cough?

A dry or a tickly cough is a cough where no mucus is produced. A cough is most often a symptom of an illness, such as a cold or flu. Though, a long-term cough can also be as a result of a more serious underlying issue. A cough can also be caused by an allergic reaction such as hay fever. A cough occurs because it is the body trying to clear something from the throat, but unlike with a mucus cough, nothing is produced.
