What are Beechams Cold & Flu Capsules?

Beechams Cold & Flu Capsules work to reduce the effects of cold and flu. They work thanks to the three active ingredients that are contained in the capsules:

  • Paracetamol
  • Caffeine
  • Phenylephrine

Paracetamol is a painkiller that will help to relieve a headache and reduce a fever if you have one. Caffeine is a mild stimulant that will help give you a boost of energy. Phenylephrine is a decongestant that will unblock the nose and sinuses, helping you to breathe easier.

What’s the difference between a cold and the flu?

Both a cold and flu are caused by a virus. There are more types of cold virus, of which there are many, and the flu, which there are significantly fewer of. A cold is generally milder than flu but the symptoms are similar. A cold will also appear more gradually instead of the flu which comes within a few hours. Cold symptoms generally only affect your nose and throat and you can do things you normally would without being infected. Whereas with the flu you will feel tired and feel too ill to do anything.

Who are these Beechams capsules suitable for?

These capsules are suitable for adults and children aged 16 and over who are suffering from a cold or flu. Anyone who is allergic to the ingredients contained in the capsules should not use them. You should also not use these capsules if you suffer from or have had in the past any of the following:

  • Kidney or liver problems
  • An overactive thyroid
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure or heart disease
  • Glaucoma
  • In the past two weeks taken monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MOAIS) prescribed for depression
  • If you are taking beta blockers

Can these Beechams capsules be used by someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding?

These capsules should not be used by anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding. This is because of the caffeine content that is contained in them.

How should Beechams Cold & Flu Capsules be taken?

Take two capsules every 4-6 hours as needed. Do not take more than six doses (12 tablets) in a 24-hour period. Avoid drinking too many drinks with caffeine in them, such as coffee and tea. This is because it can cause difficulty sleeping, shaking and an uncomfortable feeling in your chest. Do not take more these capsules for more than a week at a time.
