What are Anusol suppositories?

Anusol suppositories work to treat symptoms of internal piles or haemorrhoids, including itching or swelling in the area inside and around your anus. They also help to provide protection for raw parts of the affected area.

Why do I have piles (also known as haemorrhoids)?

The exact cause of piles, or haemorrhoids, is unknown but one of the most common things thought to cause piles is straining on the toilet. This happens when you’re feeling constipated and try to pass a bowel movement. During pregnancy, you may also get piles as your growing baby places increased pressure on your anal vessels.

How do Anusol suppositories treat haemorrhoids or piles?

Anusol suppositories contain three active ingredients which work to treat internal piles and relieve any swelling and itching you may feel. They are also antiseptic, which means they discourage bacteria from growing in the affected area. These ingredients include:

  • Zinc oxide
  • Bismuth salts
  • Balsam Pero

How to use Anusol suppositories.

Wash and dry the affected area with a soft towel before using Anusol suppositories. Remove the suppository from its plastic cover and insert into your back passage, making sure it is far enough inside that it will not slip out. Insert one Anusol suppository at night, one first thing in the morning, and one after every bowel movement.

Why do I need to answer questions to buy this product?

You do not need a prescription for Anusol suppositories, however, you will be asked to complete a short medical questionnaire by your Chemist-4-U pharmacist before we can take your order. This includes some simple questions that all pharmacies legally are required to ask before supplying this kind of product. This helps our pharmacy team to be sure that Anusol suppositories are the best choice for you.

When should Anusol suppositories not be used?

Anusol suppositories should not be used by those under the age of 18. Do not use Anusol suppositories if you are allergic to this product or any of the listed ingredients. If you have rectal bleeding, blood in the stool, or are unsure whether any bleeding you are experiencing is caused by piles, speak to your doctor before using Anusol suppositories.

As with all medicines, Anusol suppositories can have side effects, but you may not get them yourself. These side effects include:

  • Burning
  • Redness
  • Irritation
  • Itching
  • Pain

If you experience these or any other side effects while using Anusol suppositories, contact your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist. You can also record any side effect that you discover using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
