What is Allens Pine & Honey Balsam For Sore Throat?

Allens Pine & Honey Syrup is a traditional herbal treatment that will help to relieve the effects of a cold or flu. The active ingredients in the syrup, liquorice liquid extract, ipecacuanha liquid extract, and squill liquid extract, are all known as expectorants. Expectorants help to remove mucus caught in the chest and throat that causes a cough and sore throat.


What causes a cold?

A cold is most commonly caused by someone who is ill either sneezing, coughing, or blowing their nose, and it spreading through tiny air droplets. The cold itself is a virus that could one of many different types of cold virus. This is why it cannot be fully cured. A cold causes a number of symptoms, including a cough, sore throat, a blocked or a runny nose, or sneezing.


Who is this medicine suitable for?

This medicine is suitable for adults and children over 12 years of age. Anyone who is allergic to any of the ingredients contained in the medicine should not use it. You should also not use it if you have any problem with the heart or blood circulation. If you have any kidney issues, then do not use this medicine either.


Can someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding use this medicine?

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, then do not use this medicine. This is because there is no evidence as to whether or not it is safe to use. Therefore, speak to a doctor or other medical professional for advice on what treatment to use for a cough or cold.


How should Allens Pine & Honey Balsam For Sore Throat be used?

Use 10ml (two 5ml spoonfuls) every four hours but do not take more than 40ml in a 24-hour period. Shake the bottle before using the syrup.


Are there any side effects?

Like many types of medicine, there is a chance of side effects. Potential side effects include:

  • Feeling sick or nausea
  • Diarrhoea
  • Heart problems
  • Low blood potassium problems which cause muscle weakness or twitching
